- One of the most fundamental principles of accessibility is the need for keyboard navigation. If you think back to our personas, both Mary and Maxine need keyboard interactivity to use the web. They use the tab key, enter, arrow keys, and space bar to move through the page and to activate buttons and links. There's only one fundamental difference between them. They rely on the keyboard for different reasons. Mary is blind and can't see the screen to see where a mouse cursor is. She listens to the web by using a screen reader. As she uses her arrow keys and tab key to move around, her screen reader will read text to her, let her know which form field she's in, or which button she's on. Maxine, on the other hand, can see the screen. Even though she could see the mouse cursor, using the mouse is too painful because of her arthritis.
