The Senior Network Specialist is responsible for the administration and management of the Ohio Technology Consortium Shared Infrastructure’s wide area network and core network functions and oversees escalated issues 24x7, as necessary. The Ohio Technology Consortium supports the Ohio Department of Higher Education, OARnet, OhioLINK, the Ohio Supercomputer Center and Ohio Tuition Trust Authority in their critical network needs.

The Shared Infrastructure team provides an enterprise level of support to their customers, encompassing a diverse array of services that cater to advanced networking requirements. Offerings include a highly secure network infrastructure designed to protect sensitive data and ensure reliable connectivity and comprehensive Virtual Private Networks (VPN) services enabling secure remote access for users. The suite of services offered by the Shared Infrastructure team is essential for the higher education community across the state of Ohio, as it underpins critical operations and eases seamless communication and collaboration among institutions.

Responsibilities Of The Position Include

  • Acts as an escalation point for security, application and systems infrastructure team members; manages tickets in an ITIL environment to ensure that network changes and problem resolutions adhere to standard operating procedures.
  • Develops written processes and procedures for Shared Infrastructure, documents and trains staff on established processes and operational standards.
  • Works with the Enterprise Architect’s team to evaluate, design and install enhancements and upgrades to the network in alignment with the latest standards and in adherence to the latest security policies.
  • Participates in the change control process by developing, reviewing and implementing proper procedures and documentation for the change process.
  • Works independently to assess and report on the impact of network outages and scheduled vendor maintenance to Ohio Technology Consortium services and customers.
  • Works with the OARnet NOC in response to network availability, security and performance problems in the fulfillment of the Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Works independently to troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues, ensuring minimal downtime and maintaining optimal performance.
  • Works with leadership on the development of network architecture solutions that align with Ohio Technology Consortium roadmaps.
  • Evaluates current and developing technologies to offer technical guidance about system capabilities, limitations and requirements.
  • Sets a tone of professionalism that is consistent with organizational goals.
  • Serves as a resource for other networking staff and mentors novice networking employees.
  • Will be involved in after-hours maintenance windows and is on-call 24x7 for major outages.

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 4 years of experience supporting Juniper routing and switching in an enterprise network environment.
  • Experience troubleshooting TCP/IP, IPv4, IPv6, OSPF, BGP, LDP, EVPN (Ethernet VPN) and VXLAN protocols.
  • Professional experience configuring and troubleshooting Juniper or Cisco routers and switches.
  • Possesses a current Juniper or Cisco Specialist level certification.
  • Working knowledge of scripting and automation tools.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Desired Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Juniper Certified Professional certification.
  • 6+ years of experience supporting Juniper routing and switching in an enterprise network environment.
  • Design and troubleshooting of TCP/IP, IPv4, IPv6, OSPF, BGP, LDP, EVPN and VXLAN protocols.
  • Professional experience with the testing, configuration and deployment of large-scale deployments of Juniper firewalls and switches.
  • Knowledge of enterprise network services such as DNS, Net-flow traffic analysis, principles of traffic engineering.
