Position Information

Note: This announcement is to fill a current part-time (35 hours a week, 10 months during the Arlington Public Schools' calendar year) vacancy. However, this recruitment may be used to fill future vacant positions including full-time, part-time, bilingual (Spanish), and non-bilingual.

Arlington County's Department of Human Services (DHS) Public Health Division is hiring a part-time School Health Aide in the School Health Bureau. This employee provides first aid, emergency care, and clerical services in a school clinic at one of the Arlington Public Schools. The School Health Aide works as a member of a public health team providing services for a diverse population in the school and community.

Duties Include

  • Assessing and providing first aid to sick and injured children who come to the clinic during the school day;
  • Testing students' hearing and vision;
  • Responding to medical emergencies at the school;
  • Managing clinic inventory and supplies;
  • Referring students to medical providers and following-up on immunizations, physicals, eye doctors, audiologists, etc;
  • Maintaining confidential medical records, including both paper-based and electronic records;
  • Administering medications to students as authorized by parent and physician; and
  • Communicating with parents, the public health nurse, and school staff on matters affecting the health of students.

The ideal candidate with have strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with students, parents, and staff.

Selection Criteria
Minimums

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Some experience in providing direct human services in a health care setting (e.g. taking vital signs, setting up and restocking exam rooms, assisting nurses and clinicians to ensure a smooth clinic flow, providing support to the different clinic coordinators by preparing medical records and performing other post clinic follow up activities); and
  • Current valid certifications in CPR and BLS (Basic Life Support) for Healthcare Providers, or ability to obtain prior to start date.

Substitution: Satisfactory completion of college coursework in a human service-related field may be substituted for up to one year of experience on a year-for year basis (an academic year is defined as 30 semester or 45 quarter hours).

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Working in a School Health clinic;
  • Providing assistance in a clinical setting;
  • Working in school organizations, civic groups, or volunteer service groups;
  • Clerical experience in records maintenance; and/or
  • Working with children.

Special Requirements
Applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent on a favorable review of the applicant's driving record,

A pre-employment criminal records check as well as a State of Virginia Central Registry check will be conducted.

The selected candidate will be required to submit to a tuberculosis skin or blood test.

For volunteer experience to be considered as relevant work experience, please indicate hours worked per week, start/end dates, work performed, and name of organization/employer.

If substituting college coursework for the experience requirement, the human services related discipline (major course of study) AND the number of semester or quarter hours completed must be clearly indicated in the application form.

An assessment of oral Spanish proficiency would be required before a candidate can be appointed to a bilingual position. The incumbent in the bilingual position will receive the language pay premium on all hours worked and on paid leave hours.

Additional Information
Work hours: Depending on job location, hours of operation are 7:30 am-3:00 pm or 8:35 am-4:05 pm, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary to accommodate changes in school schedule.

Work location: Employee will be assigned to a public school in Arlington but may be assigned to any school as needed. School Health offices are located at 2110 Washington Blvd., Arlington, VA.

Benefits: Part-time permanent employees are eligible for Arlington County employee benefits, including health insurance, on a pro-rated basis.
