Position Summary

• Teaches, rehearses, and prepares dancers for productions and performances;

• Supports the training, development and progress of the dancers;

• Ensures the smooth running of day-to-day operations within designated areas of responsibility;

• Oversees the Indy Ballet Classrooms and Young Men’s Scholarship Outreach Programs.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

A. Supervision

• Supervises the dancers’ work, attendance, standards, motivation and well-being;

• Maintains overall artistic quality of performances while in Indianapolis and on tour;

• Effectively communicates the original design aesthetic of the production team.


B. Learning and Development

• Motivates and empowers dancers to elevate their technical and artistic skills;

• Ensures the dancers have thorough knowledge of the Company's current repertoire.


C. Performance Preparation

• Coaches, rehearses, and prepares dancers for all productions and performances;

• Teaches Company class for dancers during season, on tour, weekly during rehearsal periods, and at offsite public performances/workshops, etc.;

• Organizes cast changes, if necessary, in consultation with the Artistic Director, notifying all other relevant ballet staff, wardrobe staff, and other personnel as required;

• Takes notes during all performances and Lecture/Demonstrations to ensure the accurate execution of choreography, timing and spacing, as well as disseminates the notes to the

dancers, production and wardrobe;

• Updates Artistic Director on all production and/or wardrobe notes.


D. Management and Administration

• Assists in selection of repertoire and artists to contribute to the individual and collective development of the Company;

• Collaborates with Artistic Director and Assistant Artistic Director on season programming and casting;

• Assists choreographers/stagers in the setting of ballets;

• Creates and distributes weekly/daily rehearsal schedule and dancer event & activity calendar;

• Communicates programming and casting information to Dancers, Company, Production & Marketing departments;

• Notates the timing, music, casts, and counts (if there are counts) of ballets in company repertoire;

• Recruits new dancers, including scheduling and coordination of auditions;

• Attends and participates in staff meetings and Company meetings;

• Participates on tours, performing regular duties and representing Artistic Director during rehearsals and performances, when the Artistic Director is not present;

While on tour, consults with coordination of residency activities and presents lecture demonstrations and master classes;


E. Management of Outreach Programs

• Manage and oversee the award winning Indy Ballet Classrooms program, led by Teaching Artists of Indianapolis Ballet. The program is free of cost for all participating schools;

• Promote, and recruit for The Young Men’s Scholarship Program, which provides free instruction to young dancers based on the classical teachings of George Balanchine.


Qualifications for the Position

A. Ballet Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of the repertoire and Indianapolis Ballet productions;

• Proven track record in teaching, rehearsing, and developing professional dancers at all levels to the highest standards;

• Ability to demonstrate steps and choreography;

• Experience and understanding of the working practices of a major ballet company.


B. Management Skills

• Desire to promote effective teamwork, trust, and harmonious working relationships at all levels;

• Ability to motivate and coach people to perform and achieve superior results;

• Adeptness in imparting effective learning and development techniques to dancers;

• Demonstrated capacity to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people, junior and senior, from diverse backgrounds;

• Outstanding verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills;

• Creative problem solver, flexible, and adaptable to changing circumstances;

• Capability to manage priorities and support a busy workload;

• Effective planning and time management skills;

• Availability for scheduled classes, rehearsals and performances, including evenings and weekends as required.


Requirements

• This is a full-time, onsite job. Weekend and evening work is required during rehearsals and performances

• B.A. or M.A. in Arts and Dance Studies, or equivalent experience in professional ballet

• 7-10 years minimum of combined experience as ballet performer, teacher and/or rehearsal director

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) and Google Suite.

• A positive attitude and sense of humor
