Job Summary

The Department of Public Works (DPW) HEaT Dispatch Assistant will provide support for the safe and efficient dispatching of DPW Heavy Equipment and Transportation (HEaT) and rigging operations as required throughout the event production cycle. The HEaT Dispatch team is responsible for the intake, coordination, and tracking of all requests for equipment support at the Burning Man event.

This Temporary, Ineligible For Benefits Role Is

  • From August - September: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, based in Black Rock City, Nevada.

Duties & Essential Job Functions

Daily Operations (95%)

  • Assist the DPW HEaT Dispatch Manager to direct and oversee the logistics of Burning Man’s HEaT Operations and heavy equipment coordination.
  • Maintain equipment queue logs for active and upcoming operations.
  • Instigate all additional communication to obtain necessary job request details and supply estimated arrival times to receiving parties for equipment and crews scheduled on a project.
  • Deliver adequate documentation of completed work to the HEaT Office Manager and provide clarification of details as needed in accordance with HEaT documentation standards..
  • Liaise with all Burning Man departments to ensure timely dispatch of machinery and qualified crews to approved assignments.
  • Facilitate requests for equipment support by the HEaT Transportation team in order to maximize trucking efficiency for Black Rock City and Black Rock Station.
  • Aid in the coordination of operations requiring crane work, rigging support, and ground crew assistance through communication with the DPW HEaT Rigging Lead and the DPW Crane Operations Manager.
  • Support and actively participate in the maintenance of a clean, organized and safe workspace

Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

  • Attend and support crew attendance to daily Morning Meetings
  • Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
  • Work with the HEaT Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans.
  • Adjust workflow to support changing safety protocols as directed.
  • Participate in (Manager) Meetings when requested and maintain related correspondence.
  • Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Documentation – Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  • Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff and volunteers in Burning Man culture and business processes.
  • Training development – Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.

Qualifications

Required

  • Working knowledge of Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive) and Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Comfortable handling real-time data entry for large amounts of information, meticulous and detail oriented with the ability to follow through on recurring, tedious tasks.
  • Communicates clearly, concisely and with appropriate professionalism both verbally written; Effective communication at all levels (able to adapt style when necessary) and comfortable with high-traffic two-way radio communication.
  • Able to work in a small office space with others under an intense workload while maintaining a sense of discernment around sensitive information, physical organization, and a calm, respectful and patient demeanor to all.
  • Able to understand integrated plans and adhere to strict timelines; able to remain self-motivated on task-fulfillment, multitask or take direction to promptly switch priorities when necessary.
  • Able to accept and integrate feedback, reliable and operates with a high level of behavioral integrity.
  • Able to lead by example, motivate, and have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Keen curiosity or knowledge of Black Rock City (BRC), its departments and operations.
  • Experience working on projects in remote wilderness and/or desert environment.
  • Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.
  • Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada

Preferred

  • Knowledge of rigging and heavy machinery specifics a plus
  • Experienced in working on active construction sites
  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

Required Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record

Compensation

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:

  • From September - September is $13.00 to $15.00 per hour.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Off-playa: Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.
  • On-playa: Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
