The Director of Nursing (DON) for the Emergency department is responsible for the overall management and leadership of the nursing team within the ER unit. This role includes ensuring high-quality patient care, compliance with healthcare regulations, staff development, and efficient department operations. The DON will collaborate with other healthcare professionals to enhance patient outcomes and foster a positive working environment.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Responsible for direct administrative and technical supervision of nursing activities in the Emergency Department.
The ER Director of Nursing is responsible for the day-to-day staffing of the unit. DON will create schedule, provide coverage for vacations, illnesses, etc. DON may be required to fill shifts on occasion.
Interpret operating procedures and policies and review work performance of nurses to determine conformance with recognized standards.
Investigate and study trends and developments in nursing practices and techniques and evaluate their adaptability to need of improvements and changes.
Daily reports completed timely and with completeness. Communicating with the Chief Nursing Executive.
Trauma charts identified daily and reviewed for documentation of Nursing and Provider completeness.
Trauma Registry updated and maintained on a monthly basis.
Participate and organize ER huddles monthly involving ancillary departments, ER providers as well as Chief Nursing Executive
Participate and organize ER Trauma Quality Improvement meetings Quarterly or as mandated by designation requirements.
Maintains the Districts ER Trauma Designation as mandated by regulations.
Member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee.
Support administration in the development and implementation of the hospital’s mission, vision and overall goals.
Develop and monitor all human resources to assure the department is efficiently and effectively providing patient care. This includes the hiring process, and effective department orientation program, providing ongoing educational opportunities, honest performance evaluations, counseling when indicated, with support of the Chief Nursing Executive and Human Resources.
Manage equipment and supplies to make sure the department has the tools needed to provide patient care and to assure resources are used wisely.
Promote high standards of performance by exhibiting compassion and professionalism at all times and by being responsible for your actions, attitude, and body language.
Assist in departmental budget goals, identifying capital equipment needs, and developing new strategic goals for the department.
