Since 2019, CBE Has Been In The Process Of Addressing Anti-Blackness In The Community And In The Organization. CBE Worked With Consultants To Lead Organization-wide Retreats And Trainings On Racial Equity, Anti-Blackness And Cisheteropatriarchy. CBE Has Been Focused On

  • Implementing organizational priorities focused on defining goals and core strategies to build antiracist principles into policies and practices across different levels of the organization.
  • Coordinating an Equity Committee made up of members, staff, and board across regions to build the organization’s capacity to engage in equity work.
  • Use of Affinity Group Structures to provide space for staff to connect on shared identities of both racial and gender identity groups, to do continued healing, learning, training, and sharing transformative practices, and to build relationships.

General Position Summary

The Director of Equity would lead CBE’s justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) work focused on addressing anti-Blackness in order to become an anti-racist organization. This position will report to the Executive or Associate Director and is part of the Admin Team to provide leadership for the organization. The Director of Equity will oversee the growth of CBE with a JEDI lens, working in coordination with the Executive Director, the Admin Team made up of director-level staff in the organization, and the Equity Committee. They will coordinate with these team members to develop and implement organizational policies and procedures that reflect the mission and values of the organization. Specifically, they will ensure the culture, policies, procedures, systems and strategies at CBE align with the organization’s values around equity.

This position will be primarily remote but may require some in-person work in Richmond, East Oakland, Southeast LA, or Wilmington.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, seek input, and build consensus on updated organization’s policies and procedures, especially from the lens of equity - such as organization’s decision-making model, wellness policies (sabbatical), demographic data collection, hiring and recruitment, salary structure; to ensure the culture, policies, procedures, systems, and strategies align with the organization’s values around equity
  • Coordinate CBE’s Equity Committee, evaluate effectiveness, and adjust to meet organizational equity goals.
  • Co-design agendas and facilitate Equity Committee meetings for effective decision-making and monitoring progress of implementation of those decisions
  • Collaborate with Admin Team and other appropriate CBE staff to implement equity priorities for the organization and monitor progress, provide support and coaching as needed
  • Update and bridge different bodies of the statewide organization (i.e. amongst different regions; amongst different affinity groups; between regions and Admin Team; between Equity Committee and Board of Directors, etc.) to ensure CBE moves collectively as one while allowing offices and departments to maintain complementary autonomy over their responsibilities
  • Assess and implement organization-wide staff development, especially as it relates to equity; develop learning opportunities, including trainings, staff retreats, statewide meetings, and peer coaching
  • Work with Executive Director in the annual budgeting process to ensure adequate resources for equity priorities; work with Finance and Development team to generate resources required to actualize these priorities
  • Work as the primary contact with external consultants to accomplish any of the above
  • Take the lead on developing rapid response organizational statements.

Racial equity and language justice are key areas supported by the Equity Director. CBE has made a commitment to addressing anti-Blackness and white supremacy culture within our organization, and the Equity Director?will participate in CBE’s internal work to meet equity goals and will be a bridge to our members’ participation.

Experience And Job Requirements

  • Lived experience in equity work
  • Experience in equity plans, processes, and leading organizational assessments
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental and climate justice and experience working with low-income communities of color
  • Lived Experience or 3-5 years training in Black studies
  • Management experience, including supervision and leadership development of multiple staff
  • Experience with fundraising
  • Efficient in group facilitation, public speaking and presentation
  • Team and consensus-building skills that foster a democratic and collaborative culture
  • Strong emotional intelligence and deep understanding of transformative justice and healing practices in conflict mediation
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to present complex information clearly and effectively to multiple audiences
  • Strong people skills, be community friendly and have the ability to be inclusive and engage a broad spectrum of people representing various social, cultural and professional backgrounds
  • High accuracy, attention to detail, organization and ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage complex projects
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to ensure a positive, team-oriented environment
  • Ability to understand and navigate a complex political environment

Benefits And Compensation

This is a full-time, overtime-exempt position, with an annual salary of $111,813 and an average expected work week of around 40 hours. The Director of Equity will receive CBE’s comprehensive benefits package, including a generous vacation and leave policy (26 days of paid leave in the first year, including holidays); fully-paid premiums for medical, vision, and dental insurance; an additional mental health benefit; a 401(k) retirement plan; and a flexible spending plan. CBE pays full premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee, spouse or domestic partner, and any dependents.
