In this exciting and fast-paced position, you would serve as Deputy Director of Business Outreach located in Commerce's Business Services Division. Working in this division, you would be part of a bigger team that provides a continuity of services to companies from Launch to Legacy. This innovative Deputy Director provides strategic leadership to staff who provide tailored assistance, tools and resources in the areas of Recycling, Trade, Existing Industry, Supplier Outreach, and Emergency Management. Assistance to SC companies in these areas has a positive effect on the bottom line and provides business continuity for the state's economy.

Job Responsibilities:

The Deputy Director is focused on the overseeing the delivery of a comprehensive suite of services for companies at every stage of their lifecycle to help them achieve ongoing productivity, profitability and sustainability. The Deputy Director provides leadership to programs that deploy tailored assistance, tools and resources for a company’s optimal health. This position plans, manages and executes and provides for the continuous improvement of the Division’s service delivery programs which include oversight of the international Trade, Recycling Marketing Development, Existing Industry, Supplier Outreach and Emergency Management teams.

  • International Trade - a program that helps new and existing companies export and expand their markets internationally and domestically
  • Recycling Market Development – a program that helps industry recycle more, promotes the economic impact of recycling and assists with emerging recycling markets such as lithium-ion battery recycling
  • Existing Industry visitation and outreach initiatives for strategic sectors to ensure the state’s ongoing competitiveness and growth
  • Supplier Outreach – a program that connects suppliers to manufacturers and OEM’s generating more business for SC businesses
  • Emergency Management - oversee coordination of the ESF-24 function and help promote business resiliency before, during and after a disaster.
  • Identify short and long-term goals and develop strategies to implement and execute. Recommend program changes, enhance frameworks for service delivery and participate in the management decision-making process of the division.
  • Work to ensure strategic framework initiatives for the agency are adopted.
  • Provides supervisory support to staff to include hiring, training and evaluating performance.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with agency partners.
  • Oversees contracts and grants with agency partners to ensure the state's economic development strategy is being met by allied organizations who serve as “boots on the ground” for Commerce.
  • Assist with any small project management assigned by director or other agency staff.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

A bachelor's degree with a minimum of 5 years of economic development, business administration, public administration, or relevant program experience.

Additional Comments

This position may require weekends, overtime, and overnight travel.

Excellent teamwork, critical thinking, customer service and emotional intelligence/interpersonal skills are essential. Ability to strategize short- and long-term goals, oversee complex projects, and maintain business relationships.
