Calibrate has been retained by Burr & Forman, an Am Law 200 law firm with approximately 350 attorneys across the Southeast, to recruit a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to join the firm based in any of their office locations. The COO oversees the firm’s business operations and plays a critical role in driving firmwide growth and strategy. This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and will work in close collaboration with the Executive Committee and firm leadership.


This position requires regular travel to maintain a strong presence firmwide and may be based in any of Burr & Forman's office locations [Atlanta, GA; Birmingham, AL; Bluffton, SC; Charleston, SC; Charlotte, NC; Columbia, SC; Daniel Island, SC; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Greenville, SC; Hilton Head Island, SC; Jackson, MS; Jacksonville, FL; Mobile, AL; Montgomery, AL; Myrtle Beach, SC; Nashville, TN; Orlando, FL; Raleigh, NC; Tampa, FL; or Wilmington, DE].


Key Responsibilities and Desired Skills:

  • Strategic Vision and Alignment: Develop and communicate a clear strategic vision that aligns with the firm’s overall goals, ensuring all team members understand and are committed to the firm’s direction and priorities.
  • Operational Expertise: Streamline processes, improve efficiency, ensuring that the operational aspects support the strategic objectives.
  • Financial Performance and Profitability: Lead the firm’s financial management initiatives to drive profitability and ensure the financial health of the firm. Understand key financial metrics and use them to inform operational decisions.
  • Leadership and Interpersonal Skills: Exhibit high emotional intelligence, empathy, and exceptional people leadership skills. Demonstrate executive presence and political acumen to build consensus and foster a cohesive culture.
  • Client Service Delivery: Ensure exceptional client service delivery by prioritizing needs, addressing issues proactively and maintaining high standards of quality.


Candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, or a related field. A minimum of 20 years of experience in executive-level operations roles within a sophisticated law firm or other professional services environments is required. Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate a proven track record in leading large teams, navigating complex challenges, thinking and acting strategically, managing through change and growth, and gaining stakeholder buy-in. As such, candidates must exude excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Regular and ongoing travel to each of the firm’s offices is required.
