JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Career Services at Penn State Harrisburg, a comprehensive College of The Pennsylvania State University, is excited to welcome applications for a Career Counselor position. The Career Counselor will be crucial in personalizing the career student support while working strategically with faculty and staff at the academic schools and relevant employers to foster student success.

IMPORTANT: This is a 10-month full-time position with a reduced FTE schedule (HR 105 policy). 11 months may be considered. Career Services at Penn State Harrisburg is supportive of flexible work arrangements (HR 107 policy) when aligned with the ability to meet the needs of the unit and the essential duties of the position. Questions related to flexible work should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process.

The Career Counselor will act as a liaison to one or more academic schools and will develop expertise in those areas to serve that population of students.

The primary function is to:

  • Provide individual career counseling/coaching to undergraduates, graduates, and alumni; may provide career counseling in a group format.
  • Will use career self-assessment tools, when appropriate, and assist in clarifying career goals, engage in career research, and develop an active strategy to reach career goals in 30-60 min. Appointments.
  • Conduct document reviews (resume/cover letters) through the career system and drop-ins (brief 15 min. meetings).

Additional Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the employer engagement and strategic programming relevant to the academic career liaison. This will involve leveraging knowledge of job market; collaborating with local, regional, national, and multinational employers, as well as career services staff, faculty, and campus administrators; and participating in networking groups, establishing, and maintaining relationships with employers, and expanding the university's employer base.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise student workers (Career Ambassadors) to provide peer support.
  • Deliver presentations to internal and external groups.
  • Create and manage employer files, databases, and reports.
  • Assist with office initiatives and representing Career Services at university-wide events.

Education and Experience:

This position will be filled as a Career Services Specialist at the level of Intermediate or Advanced Professional, depending on the final applicant's experience and education.

The Intermediate level requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and 1+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional education and/or experience are required for higher-level positions. The Advanced level requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Qualifications for the position:

  • Comfortable with change and trying new approaches- Think outside of the box!
  • Previous experience working with students or in a career services/counseling capacity with a track record of student-centered approach.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Excel, and actively contribute within a team environment.
  • Programming/event planning experience.
  • Must either have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given the opportunity.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$46,400.00 - $74,000.00
