The Department of Defense (DoD), U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL) is offering a post-bachelor's internship opportunity.

What will I be doing?

The internship opportunity will provide experience with the Airworthiness Evaluation and Certification program at USAARL. The program consists of military standard (MIL-STD) testing on medical items for use on military rotary wing and fixed wing aircraft. As the selected candidate, you will learn from the lead engineer or test manager how to design, set up, program, and conduct MIL-STD testing to include altitude, hot, cold, humidity, explosive atmosphere, rapid decompression, acceleration, drop, Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility (EMI/EMC), vibration, sand, dust, and rain testing of medical equipment.

The internship will also provide experience with projects focusing on giving medical care to patients on board military medical transport vehicles, also known as enroute care. These enroute care projects may include testing and evaluation of medical equipment and/or conducting medical research specific to movement of patients. The participant will learn and apply research methods focused on testing, data collection, data analysis, and laboratory testing using simulators. The participant may also learn and apply grant writing principles and research protocol (e.g., Institutional Review Board - IRB) writing principles. Finally, the participant will learn and apply concepts of statistical analysis and unique data reduction and analysis techniques to test and research data. The participant will also have the opportunity to participate in ongoing data collection in laboratory and field settings. The participant will collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team on-site and at temporary duty travel locations.

What is the anticipated start date?

The USAARL is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAARL. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

The U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL) located at Fort Novosel, Alabama, is a nationally recognized laboratory for research into safety, survival, impact tolerance, sustainability and performance effectiveness of aviators and Soldiers. About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications

The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in a technical field, preferably engineering. Must be proficient using Microsoft Office products and test measurement instruments, for example, multi-meters, cameras, thermometers, etc.
