It’s no surprise that with the advent of #AI tools, many of these ambitious provocateurs rushed headstrong into the techie embrace of #ChatGPT and hundreds of other AI tools on the market. Superb POV on the future of search, how AI will disrupt search and how Google’s own Gemini (Ai platform) is disrupting Google itself… Are we more rapidly moving towards the reality imagined and articulated below by Google’s ex CTO Craig Silverstein back in 2003..no that’s not a typo..20 years ago: “When search grows up, it will look like Star Trek: you talk into the air (“Computer! What’s the situation down on the planet?”) and the computer processes your question, figures out its context, figures out what response you’re looking for, searches a giant database in who-knows-how-many languages, translates/analyses/summarises all the results, and presents them back to you in a pleasant voice. I think this technology is about, oh, 300 years away..” It’s now in front of our eyes so what does this mean for brands and agencies managing the most significant revenue driving media channel ? If you’ve looked into media mix modeling, you’ve probably heard about the granularity criticism. And honestly, it’s a fair question. MMMs always have to navigate the trade-off between the number of channels that are being included and the signal you’ll get from each of them. Ideally, you want to include a lot of channels because you want granular, tactical information about where you should be adding spend, subtracting spend, shifting spend, etc. You want super granular tactical information. But, on the other hand, the more channels you include, the more that you're spreading your signal around smaller and smaller buckets. That's just an iron law of any statistical model – the more parameters that you're estimating, the more uncertain you're going to be about any single one of them. That said, there's always some zone where there's an acceptable level of certainty and some acceptable number of channels to give you tactical information. And within that range, there are different configurations that you could select. We work with our customers when we're building the model at the initial stages to find the happy medium (we like to start with about 30 channels) right in the middle of that zone where we're getting the right amount of certainty and the right amount of tactical information to drive day-to-day decisions.

Over half are forecasting at least 5% topline growth in their GenAI-related business cases and are investing accordingly. - Around 80% of CMOs have already deployed GenAI to make internal processes faster, more productive, and less labor intensive, especially in areas such as content creation and social media engagement. - However, the most promising strategic areas for GenAI solutions—such as personalization, customer insight generation, and predictive analytics—will take longer to develop and deploy at scale..."

Really fun interview with Pierre DeBois about Perplexity's new advertising play. Anyone whos tired of listening to me talk about it, knows Im a HUGE Perplexity fan. For any moment where you've got a large coffee in hand & are about to do some Deep Googling and open ~50 tabs, Perplexity is a total game changer. If their search results have ads on them - assuming they're relevant ads - they just enhance the experience. I'm all for it. The game changer for me is... Where Google (pre-Gemini Google) depends on a website having an explicit answer to my question, these new LLM tools can just generate the answer. Totally upends traditional SEO. This is my quote: "When I search online, I am looking for someone with an answer to my question. Google provided it as a search engine looking at the answers people provide via websites. AI has changed how that information is arranged, with Perplexity squarely aimed at the search model." "To help preserve a safe Internet for content creators, we’ve just launched a brand new “easy button” to block all AI bots. It’s available for all customers, including those on our free tier." This is really neat! Whatever you land on AI scraping, giving site owners the one-click ability to make a choice is great. Some will choose not to use this; others will hit the button. Making it this easy means it's a choice about the principles, not any kind of technical considerations. Which is what it should be. Not every site is on Cloudflare (and some also choose not to use it because of how it's historically dealt with white supremacist / Nazi content). But many are, and this makes it easy for them. Other, similar providers will likely follow quickly.

Hemingway has a quote about going bankrupt that describes the process as “gradually, then suddenly.” It applies to exponential change, and feels very apt for current technological, economic, and social trends. I think we’re in the early part of several changes that will intersect. For example: increasing adoption of AI tools in businesses, growing popularity of four-day work weeks, persistent reluctance to return-to-office, early signs of AI’s impact on jobs (especially for copywriters, translators, and customer service agents), and more experiments with universal basic income. Exponential change feels gradual, then sudden. We’re currently on the flatter end of the AI curve, where people can criticize predictions of major disruption because they don’t see it now. But I think that would be a mistake. Exponential change doesn’t usually feel exponential initially.
