The one critical mistake companies make in tail end spend What is Tail End Spend and Why is it so important? Tail end spend is simply the spend on small, infrequently purchased, non-catalog, non-contract items. Often this is not managed as well as contracted items since it involves a high volume of many small, small transactions. The amount of money spent is deceiving but the total becomes significant. Tail end spend accounts for up to 20% or more of a company’s procurement budget. And because these are non-contract, non-catalog items and challenging to manage there is great potential for wasteful tail spend, eating up to 5-10% of a company’s total annual revenue! Think about this for a moment – a potential waste of 5-10% of a company’s revenue! When was the last time you were able to add another 5-10% to your company revenue by changing one simple process? The number one mistake companies make in managing tail end spend:  choosing the wrong supplier. Here is why. You are careful about choosing your suppliers for strategic and contracted commodities, why not the same careful consideration used when choosing a supplier for tail end items? Just as there are specialty suppliers for your strategic items, yes, there are also specialty suppliers for tail end purchases. You might think about using your regular distributor for tail-end items, for convenience. This decision can be where the problems start. ·        Cost: Expect to pay a premium, as much as 30% or more of what a tail end specialist would charge. Distributors have higher mark-ups, plus they do not offer the best prices for small, low cost items ·        Speed: I hope you have patience since it is going to take a while to get your quote back. The reason - distributors are usually unfamiliar with specialty items and the best choice of suppliers ·        Expertise: Regular distributors often focus on core, high-volume products and do not have the same level of expertise or product range for tail-end items. Specialized suppliers can offer more targeted solutions and better support for these specific needs. ·        Supply chain: Specialized suppliers for tail-end items have faster lead times and better options for availability. If getting your product on time is important specialty suppliers have the right mix of suppliers to ensure that the necessary items are delivered promptly without delays In summary: Specialized suppliers for tail-end spend items can provide vastly better cost efficiency, expertise, flexibility, and lead times
