I'll expect more from you if you tell me you want to make something accessible and §508 conformant. The 508 digital accessibility standards are mirroring WCAG 2.0 AA. That version of WCAG came out in December 2008. In other words, that standard is 16 years old... So I'm going to push for you to, at a minimum, adhere to the latest version of WCAG. That is, WCAG 2.2. By doing that, you'll still conform to §508, but you'll also make things more accessible for your end users. Also, remember, accessibility standards are the starting line, not the target.

What if I told you... ...you can't pay your way out of accessibility? It isn't a technical problem! That means you can't fix accessibility with a once-and-done approach. You can hire an outside vendor to work on it. They'll evaluate your site and fix everything they find, without needing much involvement from you. They'll address the symptom, but not the cause. It's like taking pills for a head ache that gets worse and worse, without consulting a doctor to figure out the underlying cause. Yes, the head ache will go away for a while. But you haven't solved anything there. Think about it. Your website is an ongoing project. It needs constant changes and updates. The work is never done. Any change you make may create new accessibility barriers. It’s this dynamic aspect of development that forces you to pay continuous attention to accessibility. There's no way you can get any lasting results without treating the underlying causes. For #accessibility, the underlying causes could be any of the following: - lack of awareness - no accessibility knowledge in the team - inefficient processes - no guard-rails against releasing inaccessible features - no business support The truth is you can't outsource accessibility because you can't outsource responsibility!

Six impossible things to believe about #accessibility. At least one will surprise you! Here's my list: 1. People with disabilities are not a minority 2. Accessibility isn't a feature 3. Accessibility isn't a technical problem 4. Accessibility isn't time-consuming and expensive 5. You can't outsource accessibility 6. We can make our website accessible I will talk about each for the next six days on my email list.

It's going to sound crazy... But did you know you don't need permission for accessibility? I've never heard anyone berating developers or designers: - Who told you that you could work on accessibility? - Who gave you permission to test with a screen reader? - Who said you could solve this? What? Did you think that accessibility work requires some form of special authorisation? Heck no! It may sound crazy, but you don't need anyone's permission to prioritise accessibility. It's part of the job description. It's already your responsibility. I've never heard of a developer asking for permission to write secure code. Or a designer needing a special mandate to create a user-friendly interface. It's not any different with accessibility. If you’re the designer, developer, or any stakeholder in a product, you already have the authority to ensure that your product is usable by everyone. You don't need to ask for permission. Just start. Read up on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). These guidelines are publicly available and meant to be used by anyone creating digital content. Try out tools and techniques used by people with disabilities. Testing with a screen reader or any other assistive technology is something anyone can and should do. Share your findings, collaborate with others and keep learning. Solving accessibility issues should be seen as part of good practice in web development. It's just like ensuring your code is secure or your design is user-friendly. For accessibility, all you need is awareness, empathy and a commitment to inclusivity. If you're passionate about making digital spaces accessible, don't wait for permission. Go ahead and start. #Accessibility #A11y #Webdevelopment #InclusiveDesign #ShipAccessible

I feel like Progress Over Perfection by Meryl Evans, CPACC (deaf) is one of the best articles about accessibility I've read. https://lnkd.in/e9HMz-Eh I feel like it's the clearest depiction of a lot of the emotions around trying to be a good accessibility citizen (shame! guilt! frustration!) and the counter-productivity of accessibility zealotry. "Educate...don't berate" is great advice. We should all strive to make the web more accessible whatever our role may be. But we also need to recognize that we're humans that slip up and make mistakes. That's life. But all-or-nothing thinking isn't helpful. Progress over perfection. I think AI can help authors develop alt text similar to how auto-generated captions provide a base that a human can edit. I worry that the hype around web browsers using AI to describe images might lead to authors not adding alt text. AI can't determine the author's intention for each image and will miss key details. I do like Firefox's strategy of showing the AI-generated alt text each time an image is added to a PDF and asking the user to validate it. #accessibility https://lnkd.in/gyy8YVmx
