Patrick participated as a mechanical engineer and energy modeler on a team of engineers from Vanderweil and architects from HOK to propose a complete renovation of an existing 1,000,000 SF federal office building in downtown Los Angeles to transform it into a net-zero energy consuming building. Patrick participated as a mechanical engineer and energy modeler on a team of engineers from Vanderweil and architects from HOK to propose a complete renovation of an existing 1,000,000 SF federal office building in downtown Los Angeles to transform it into a net-zero energy consuming building. Patrick contributed to a highly integrated design that fused sustainable design strategies such as natural ventilation, geothermal heating/cooling, and solar hot water heating with pushing-the-envelope strategies such as on-site algae biofuel production. The proposed design won first place in the national competition among young designers, and Patrick helped develop and present the design at over a dozen venues including the BuildBoston Conference and the Metropolis Conference in NYC.
