Are your reference checks truly effective? Mohit Aron, founder of Cohesity and Nutanix, believes they can be—if done right. Generic questions like "Is this person good?" often yield low-signal responses. Instead, Aron takes a systematic approach, asking references to rate candidates on a 1-10 scale. This numeric calibration reveals far more insights than broad qualitative questions. It also allows references to provide negative feedback by framing it as faint praise. I applaud the Federal Trade Commission for adopting a comprehensive ban on new non-competes. While the U.S. Chamber of Commerce challenged the regulation, Pure Storage offers a different perspective. Since 1941, California has made non-competes unenforceable, except in certain situations such as key executives in the sale of their company. A highly competitive labor environment is one important reason why this State remains the world's fifth-largest economy, which is significantly enabled by the absence of non-compete agreements. In our early days, Pure Storage faced a barrage of non-compete lawsuits from a large entrenched vendor, which did not want its people leaving for a competitor. Certainly, seeing trained personnel go to a competitor is uncomfortable, and employees certainly need to protect confidential information. But, competitive hiring works both ways and companies need to create attractive and competitive workplaces to retain their top talent. To create a competitive economy and world beating companies, our country needs to enable a mobile, competitive workforce. Eliminating non-compete agreements will enhance our country’s competitiveness, and encourage companies to focus on their work environments rather than their legal contracts. At #OffsetSymposium2024, and couldn’t agree more with Corey Jaskolski that wide-spread #cloud adoption across #DOD allows startups to scale more broadly, lowers their costs, allows them to move faster, and ultimately delivers more, saving the limited taxpayer dollars we have for #nationaldefense.

He pointed out an important vector to consider while assessing AI's impact - customer segmentation. 2024 has been an stimulating year for me, as a Member of Board of Directors across multiple companies and industries Sunrun, Proofpoint, Imprivata, Ping Identity and non profit City Year. Our learning as corporate directors is continuous and I am thoroughly enjoying engaging in small and large groups Stanford Women on Boards, #Deloitte Bay area women on boards to name a few. Last week was a amazing session with #IndraNooyi ex-CEO of PepsiCo and current Board of Director at Amazon, with her coaching at Stanford Law School. My top 5 takeaways : The board and CEO should be focused on running the company for the life of the company not the life of CEO. Shape the board, don’t stack it. Every board member should frequently evaluate if they are still relevant. Deliberate succession planning for both the CEO and the board is essential. Human capital asset is becoming more and more important for investors. #lifelonglearning, #boardgovernance
