I am so proud of all of the coverage that The Statesman did regarding COVID-19. This trend also goes for other student journalists across the country and can be seen in this Poynter archive, which features student media from every state, including five articles from The Statesman.   • Residents of Freeport, NY participate in nationwide Black Lives Matter protests

    -

    On Sunday, June 7, about 500 local residents gathered at the Freeport Long Island Rail Road train station in Freeport, NY to protest in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and insist on justice for George Floyd. The Nassau County Police Department walked alongside protestors throughout the entire protest. Residents marched through Freeport, took a detour to the Freeport Nautical Mile and then walked to the neighboring town of Merrick.

    The Marcy McGinnis Scholarship should inspire students to recognize and respect the special place broadcast writing, reporting and producing has in the work of journalism and to nurture their visual storytelling talents.

    Selection will be based on a body of work that demonstrates dedication and excellence in broadcast journalism in the areas of reporting, writing, producing, shooting and editing video, and on-air performance for class and special projects.
