CSSC joins over 200 organisations, from across the UK’s Health and Fitness sector, in calling on all parties to commit to policies and actions that address the appalling and deteriorating state of health and fitness in the U.K. 2023 saw record levels of sickness absence and the NHS is at breaking point under the demands it faces. Govt, of whichever persuasion, needs cut the rhetoric and deliver resourced action. We need a population that is ‘Up, Out & Active’. Govt and Employers need to collaborate to encourage and assist our communities, our population, our children, our colleagues and ourselves to get active. New report: #Neurodiversity and #REDI - PINBALL SYSTEMS, SNAKES AND LADDERS OR PERSON-CENTRED PROVISION - by Prof. Amanda Kirby. This report written by Prof. Amanda Kirby is a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about neurodiversity and REDI (Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion). It is a valuable resource for those who work with or support young people and for anyone looking to create more inclusive and equitable systems. The report highlights the fact that many neurodivergent young people who have experienced childhood adversity are not receiving the support they need. It calls for a more holistic approach to supporting these young people, one that considers their individual needs and experiences. "Adults aged 75+ continue to drive the growth in activity levels." (Active Lives Adult Survey November 2022-23 Report) Just take a second to think about that... It's great that older people are getting more active. But it also means that there has been almost no change in the last decade in activity levels amongst the majority of the population. And "activity levels are significantly lower if you are less affluent, if you live in a more deprived place or come from certain demographic groups". This is the hidden story behind these numbers. Being physically active, with all the huge benefits this brings, is increasingly the preserve of the older and more affluent, with youngest and least affluent left behind. These are also the groups who would benefit most in improved physical and mental health and wellbeing, and reduce the burden on the NHS. This is incredibly worrying for the future and there needs to be substantive change to move the needle. #MeetMovePlay ParkPlay

"Women in Sport’s research found complex barrier and deep-rooted negative attitudes are affecting girls’ enjoyment of sport. Body image and puberty are also significant factors. 78% say they avoid sport when they have their period while 73% don’t like others watching them take part in activity." Girls drop out of sports at a rate 2-3 times higher than boys. We're committed to changing this narrative. We believe every girl deserves the opportunity to experience the transformative power of sports. The more we know about why girls leave sport, the more we can help to encourage them to stay. The Global Observatory for Gender Equality and Sport is thrilled to have launched our Good Practice and Knowledge Sharing Portal (GO-GPKNP).   There is a need for a centralised repository and information hub. This platform aims to collate and share good practices stories, case studies and research that capture the experiences, challenges, successes and needs of diverse stakeholders. These include countries, sports organizations, civil society, academia, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), UN partners and other development committed to advancing gender equality and the health, rights and empowerment of women and girls, in all their diversity, in and through physical education, physical activity, and sport (PEPAS)   Moreover, the GO-GPKSP adopts a structured approach, featuring quarterly thematic segments on gender equality. These will encompass critical topics such as gender-based violence and safeguarding, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), the portrayal of women in media, and bridging the gender and race pay gap, among others. We encourage you to use this unique platform to showcase your lived experiences, expertise and research in the form of case studies and good practice stories, in order to share knowledge, connect with other advocates, researchers and practitioners across the world, and inform policies and programmes. 🎯 As presented to its members in attendance at the UEC's first General Assembly on 24th April 2024, the UEC has worked on an initial strategy document it aims to further develop in the coming months with key objectives for European club football. 'UEFA 2024 Euros – an opportunity to inspire a new generation to enjoy sport' - Children's Commissioner for England Participation in team sports is a powerful tool – it enables children to develop communication skills, create lasting friendships and build their confidence. Playing sport teaches children about setting and achieving goals, helping children to understand their emotions and redirect negative feelings in a positive way, building resilience and making them feel better about themselves. 2024 is a potential golden summer of sport with major sporting events including the Euros, the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, as well as the usual line up of UK-based events like Wimbledon, the British Grand Prix and The Open. It's an opportunity for a new generation of children to be inspired by the thrill of live sport and be part of the huge swell of national pride that accompanies a tournament like the Euros, which kicks off today. The Big Ambition confirmed children’s love for sport, particularly football – their responses were passionate, and it was clear just how much they valued the ability to be active and children appreciated the benefits sports brought to their daily lives.  However, it was clear from The Big Ambition that many children felt there weren’t enough spaces to be active and play football, children from as young as six spoke about wanting more football pitches to use.  While there is still some way to go to make football more equitable for all, it’s fantastic to see so many children that are passionate about being active. Terrific column by Owen Slot. If we think of sports as communities - and I think we should - then we have two duties/opportunities, to represent and to lead. - Represent the interests of those communities - ie, advocate for the change they want. - And lead those communities in achieving that change. It’s something Chris Boardman - who features in the article - has been able to do for cycling. On this topic - sustainability - there is work to do for sport to get its own house in order, but there is also the opportunity to represent and to lead those communities in achieving change with benefits way beyond sport.

The National Sector Partners Group (NSPG) has called for stronger measures to reduce inequalities in sport and physical activity. The call is a response to the latest Active Lives study from Sport England, which shows there remain “long-standing #inequalities” based on gender, ethnicity and disability. Women, those from lower socio-economic groups and Black and Asian people are still less likely to be active than others. Worryingly, since 2015, there has been a fall in the number of Black and Asian adults who are classed as physically active. This is despite Sport England saying it has put “tackling inequalities at the heart” of its Uniting the Movement strategy, which it launched more than three years ago, in January 2021. The UK is currently 11th out of 15 comparable European nations for activity levels. “Data from the Active Lives study clearly demonstrates that we must work harder and faster to generate transformative change in our nation’s health and wellbeing,” the NSPG said in a statement.
