    India is the third largest emitter of carbon emissions and is projected to overtake the US by 2030 if it stays on its current trajectory. This puts India in the center stage for deep-decarbonization to keep global warming below 2°C.
    Growing population, economic development, urbanization trends and move towards providing 100% electricity and clean-cooking access, though necessary for India’s development, are growing energy demand and putting pressure on the resource constrained and inefficient power sector of the country.
    Decarbonization of the power sector along with increased electrification of energy demand hold the key to achieving deep-decarbonization. Currently 75% of the electricity generated is from coal and only 15% from renewables. While on one hand electricity rates are unaffordable in India, on the other most utility companies are facing a financial crisis due to inefficient operations and high distribution losses.
    While the challenges for India are immense, they are not insurmountable. Through a streamlined target driven roadmap, dedicated policies, decarbonization of electricity and electrification of more end uses, India can well be on its path to deep-decarbonization.
