In an effort to address workplace violence, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 553 on September 30, 2023. The deadline for implementation is July 1, 2024, leaving employers with limited time to prepare. This first-of-its-kind legislation requires employers to establish basic safeguards to ensure the safety of their employees while on the job. Employers - Great article from Fisher Phillips on potential changes for employers if PAGA reform becomes law! What Should You Do? Employers should monitor the legislation to keep track of whether these groundbreaking changes become law. You should immediately commence processes and take “reasonable steps” for your organization to avail yourselves of these welcome changes. This includes updating your handbook, conducting audits, and training your employees. You should also immediately consult your legal counsel to ensure that the processes are consistent with legal obligations. Reward Gateway recently added the title “chief appreciation officer” to its chief people officer role. Why? Because when employees feel valued and appreciated, they perform better, and companies enjoy stronger retention rates. As discussed below, the point of creating this title (even if it’s an add-on to an existing role at Gateway) is to call out the importance of embedding a culture of employee appreciation at the company. The chief appreciation officer’s responsibilities include implementing evidence-based practices and design thinking to foster an environment where appreciation is a core aspect of the company’s culture. This involves working closely with the leadership team to promote emotional intelligence and self-awareness among leaders and ensuring that appreciation is a central part of business strategies and boardroom discussions. The ultimate goal is to improve employee engagement, wellbeing, and productivity by making employees feel seen and valued as whole individuals, not just for their output​. Notably, Gateway created the role after researching what its employees need to excel. This is a clear business need. Employees who feel valued at work are often happier, more productive, and less likely to look for other employment opportunities. And I don’t think it’s the last we have heard of the need for a chief appreciation officer. According to Gallup’s 2024 State of the Global Workplace report, approximately 62% of employees worldwide lack engagement at work. This means they perform only the necessary tasks and feel disconnected from their jobs. Jim Harter, Gallup’s chief scientist of workplace management and wellbeing, told Fortune magazine, “When [employees] feel that the organization doesn’t care as much about them, they’re going to give less of an effort.” Building a culture of appreciation is good business.
