Yesterday I talked with Ted Meissner about ethical leadership in his podcast. His first question was: What are ethics? I appreciated this question very much. Not many people have asked me this question so directly. And: What does it mean to lead ethically? My short answer often is: being increasingly aware (noticing) of how our way of thinking, judging, perceiving, speaking, acting impacts self, others, world. Is the way we are in the world harmful to self, others, world or life enhancing, encouraging, supportive? As leaders do we create conditions that cause distress or wellbeing, ie safety, belonging, creativity? This is a practice, hence my ethical leadership programme does not offer theory of ethical leadership, but a robust practical framework for leading ethically. 📢 I've got a client story to share 📢 In February I started working with a woman, Ilene, to help her feel more effective (and less frustrated!) in her day-to-day work. We started by putting language to her unique strengths. And when we looked at her strengths profile, we discovered she has one of the most rare strengths for the population and particularly for women - the ‘Command’ strength. People with the Command strength are skilled at speaking up, ensuring others are heard, and taking charge of challenging situations without hesitation. Ilene realized that this strength made her a great leader for her direct reports - they know she isn’t afraid to tackle difficult conversations and advocate for them. She also realized that when under stress, the Command strength can come across as intimidating to others. Her tone intensifies, she speaks quickly, and her conviction can be overwhelming. In the early days of my career, even the smallest comment could shake me deeply, leaving me anxious and off-kilter. Can you relate? As I progressed in my leadership role and learned about coaching, neuro-mindfulness, and anti-fragility, I realized the importance of confronting our triggers head-on. Triggers are intense emotional responses that disrupt our inner peace. They come in different forms but also bring valuable lessons. Instead of being overwhelmed by them, let's get curious and lean into them. Imagine feeling unsure about your work performance, and someone criticizes you. Ouch! It's natural to feel hurt. But instead of just defending yourself or judging the critic, see it as an opportunity to understand your trigger and address it within yourself. By tapping into our inner self-confidence and objectivity, we can prevent negative emotions from lingering. When we feel triggered or hurt, it's important to pause, giving ourselves some mental space from the event. Taking a deep breath in this moment helps us gain a broader perspective and avoid getting lost in the trigger. This small practice positively impacts our nervous system, shifting us from negative emotions to feeling more open, creative, and free to respond differently. Instead of avoiding triggers, let's embrace them as opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Each trigger presents a chance to learn something new about ourselves and live more freely. So, next time you find yourself triggered, remember you're human—it's normal. Embrace triggers as valuable opportunities. They help us become the best versions of ourselves. Interesting article by Ron Carucci. Destructive behaviors often stem from deeply ingrained narratives formed by past experiences. These “origin stories” act as biases, shaping our reactions and perpetuating harmful patterns. Without identifying and rewriting these stories, we continue to reinforce them. Uncovering these narratives can lead to breakthroughs where other methods fail, helping to change chronic behaviors like angry outbursts or excessive control. Addressing the root causes can pave the way for healthier, more productive actions, transforming both personal and professional lives.

Isolation is killing men. I talk to many men who are executive coaching clients and personal friends who deeply desire connections with a few men. Regardless of marital status, many men are isolated and lonely. We are surrounded by people but deeper connections are a challenge to experience. A question to ponder: Besides family members, who are 6 men you would choose to be your pallbearers to carry your body when you have died? A better question is: Who are 6 men who can be burden-bearers to help carry you while you are alive?
