Here's how you can evaluate and optimize existing business strategies using logical reasoning.
SMART goals have to be inextricably tied to your mission and/or vision. It was over 10 years ago, but I think Seth Godin said it best on his blog. At Funded House, we ask ourselves this question nearly every day: "What’s it for?" Seth goes on to say: "Being clear about why we're doing and why is the first step in doing it better. If you're not happy about the honest answer to this question, make substantial changes until you are." As you set strategic priorities and create SMART goals, you have to check them against your company's mission or vision before, during and after. Especially in a highly-collaborative environment–which I fully endorse–it is all-to-easy to lose the plot in a sea of team-member opinions.

What do you do if you want to use temporary and contract work as a launchpad for your own business?
"Pick a niche and own that b***h." Years ago, I was speaking at a special event for freelancers and a fellow speaker—who was about to leave a world-famous company and set out on her own—offered this advice. It was notable because it was the one and only time I heard her curse. And also because it was great advice. She had spent years supporting the company's freelancer customers so she had real data on the difference between struggling and successful freelancers. As a business owner, I can confirm. I have never once looked for a generalist, but I look for experts all the time. The people who get referred are the ones who have a clear and simple reputation for being great at one particular thing.

Here's how you can stand out from competitors and differentiate your brand as a leader.
Hands down, the easiest way to stand out as a brand is to pick a customer touchpoint that everyone else takes for granted and absolutely blow it out of the water. Buc-ee's gas stations in Texas are a perfect example. They have the largest, nicest, and cleanest bathrooms you have ever seen. As a direct result, people plan their trips around stops at Bucee's. And the gas station brand (think about that) has developed such a cult following that they make a small fortune off of their branded merchandise alone.

What are the best ways to foster innovation and retain employees?
Loyalty is a two-way street. There are few things I have less patience for than CEOs who cry about people not being loyal anymore and talk about laying people off in the same breath. I mean, why on earth would anyone give you more of their time and brainpower than they absolutely have to if the relationship is one-sided? Yes, sometimes we have to let people go - even when we don’t want to - but as long as they're with us we should be as committed to them and as we want them to be us.
