Projects

  • Optimisation of Quality Improvement Teaching in Medical and Pharmacy Programmes

    - Present

Quality improvement or improvement science is the ‘research’ of practice in action. Whilst the existing MBBS and MPharm programmes provide a range of research education and practice affordances they currently do not embed improvement science in a meaningful way. This additional research literacy is important to embed in our healthcare curricula.

Whilst the existing MBBS and MPharm programmes provide a range of research education and practice affordances they currently do not embed improvement science in a meaningful way. This additional research literacy is important to embed in our healthcare curricula.

This project, with its focus on any aspect of health, health care and wellbeing makes connections across the individual programme and between medicine and pharmacy programmes. The immediacy of an impact of small health improvement projects will, we hope, generate momentum to encourage life-long practitioners of health care improvement. The staff leads are the Directors of the UCL Medical School and the UCL School of Pharmacy.

The project received £800 grant from UCL as part of the UCL ChangeMakers, a prestigious project award programme designed to support collaboration and innovation to enhance the UCL learning experience.

  • Community delivery of a semi-automated fractal analysis tool in CMR

The trabeculae of the left ventricle change in health and disease, but their measurement as a clinically useful biomarker is difficult. One approach is to measure the complexity using a fractal approach on cardiac magnetic resonance images to obtain a fractal dimension. This approach generates new insights but to date has only been partly explored.

One approach is to measure the complexity using a fractal approach on cardiac magnetic resonance images to obtain a fractal dimension. This approach generates new insights but to date has only been partly explored.

We developed and validated a set of easy-to-use fractal tools for cardiac MR now available and deployed on platforms accessible to all on free OsiriX and commercial Cvi42 platforms. The work involved programming in MatLab, R and Python and the use of FD mathematical models. The technical manuscript describing plugin development is still under review and free plugins will be uploaded to the site after the peer-review process is completed.
