The "design economy" -- wherein value is largely created by those employed in design roles -- is in full swing. You can see this writ large in just about every industry, from consumer electronics to IT and apps, to energy, automotive, healthcare, and even the marketing and ads in those industries. Every time you curse at your HR or healthcare provider's app for being clunky, it's because it likely wasn't designed well...and hence conveys less value to you. As Sam Altman continues to describe #AI that costs billions to develop, uses millions of dollars to power and seems untethered from any utility to humans, I assume they have a different Iron Triangle. The Iron Triangle of #ArtificialIntelligence is where the product is somehow all three simultaneously: • Useless • Unethical • Unsustainable It can never be useful, ethical or sustainable because they choose not to be. This is unlike the original Iron Triangle where the choices between Time, Scope and Cost are imposed by external forces. They are boundaries demanded by markets, customers and managers. Silicon Valley explicitly chooses to be useless, unethical and unsustainable. The exaggeration and BS of their business plans, supported by the almost limitless cash of venture capitalists, means that the products they choose to make are internally bounded.

Given the unbelievable pace of AI development, most of the tools we are creating today for creative work will need to be redesigned by the time they are released. Reflecting on the impact of AI on the architectural practice and business model, and translating this concept into our field, I think this quote by Don Draper from Mad Men reflects the real power of generative AI. Pushing the boundaries of creativity and expanding the imaginative powers of people in a new co-creation design model with the client will be a game-changer.

Masks of emotion 🤿 In the quest to navigate the complexities of emotional intelligence within the digital realm, innovations emerge as both heroic and fraught with challenges. The advances of text-to-avatar leapt significantly forward, yet remain opaque filters between our personas while offering pixel palettes for digital expression. Far from being merely cosmetic; they are purported to bring the less visible, perhaps more vulnerable and introverted among us, “to the (virtual) table.” Historically, digital spaces have been sanctuaries for introverts, offering a less intimidating platform for engagement than the physical world. However, this digital evolution also presents a paradox. Those with high emotional intelligence (EQ), particularly attuned to the subtleties of emotional body language, find themselves at a disadvantage, navigating terrain where such cues are filtered, if not entirely absent. Effective advancement, while aiming to democratize participation, inadvertently amplifies a concerning trend. The drive towards perfectionism, coupled with an extrinsic motivation to conform to emotionally intelligent digital perceptions, fosters a destructive pattern. It's a digital manifestation of emotional intelligence absolutism that, while structurally normative, lacks capacity for depth of human connection. Expectations for digital emotional intelligence, therefore, can become a dark pattern, one that prioritizes the appearance of overt empathy and understanding over actual felt presence. Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises a future where these challenges are mitigated, where the augmentation of human connection bridges the gap between digital interactions and full spectrum human emotion. Yet, this future is not imminent. We stand on the precipice of a prolonged period of growing pains, years in which the promise of AI to enhance our emotional intelligence will be tested and refined. The goal is ambitious: to advance full-body intelligence in digital spaces, fostering a shared, sensual wisdom that transcends the current limitations. This ambition confronts a fundamental truth—the digital realm, in its current state, caters predominantly to the rational, sidelining the emotional, the intuitive, and the deeply human aspects of our interactions. The journey towards this future, where digital and emotional intelligence coalesce, is a profound exploration of what it means to connect as humans. The digital space and our expectations must evolve beyond rational confines to embrace the full complexity of human emotion, crafting spaces where emotional cues are not lost but amplified, where introverts and extroverts alike can thrive safely without the compromise of their emotional depth. Pave this way to our future where digital interactions are not just exchanges of information, but understood to be limiting Individual contributors and managers alike with renewed mindfulness of the mirror bonds of our physical. 🕸️ #HypergraphMindset #EQ
