“I worked directly for Brendon for 5 years and he proved every day that he was not just an exceptional manager, but an exceptional person. He is ethical, highly competent, a leader and he handled every business interaction with integrity. No matter how busy he was, he always took the time to sit down and explain an answer to any question I had. It's clear he truly enjoys teaching and leading others, and he is excellent at both. The 5 years I spent working with him was a highlight of my career and I consider myself fortunate that I had the opportunity to learn from someone like him.”

THIS... is why we started Summit Venture Studio... These are 27 software development projects Spencer Walker and I worked on while inside the University of Utah. The Y-axis is Millions of dollars (valuation). The X-axis are value inflection points. The two companies that had the highest value at exit/raise in this chart were actually valued much higher but it skewed the graph so I am just showing how much they raised. The GREEN all exited or raised money, the BLUE were all licensed to established companies so a real value was never set after that and the RED were shut down. An interesting point to think about is that these projects were "assigned to us" and were not "chosen" as good business opportunities. Now we are screening the deals we work on for commercial viability. I am super excited for the future. Who wants to come and play with us and start a company with us? We have 8 in the pipeline and I just finished a meeting where we agreed to launch our next company hopefully in the next few weeks.

Take a minute and think about the hardest processes, situations or businesses to plan for or manage –and what you can do about them. Hint: the hardest are not necessarily the most complicated. Imagine this. A bunch of very skilled soccer players wearing Virtual Reality googles that show them their surroundings accurately but with a 5 second delay. Do you think they can play? What distinguishes good players? Athleticism, ability to manipulate the ball, and projecting where the ball is, in that order. But with a 5 second delay, the order is flipped. Predicting where the ball will (by far) matter the most. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬, 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬, 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 when results are separated from actions by a long time. Good strategies require hypotheses about what will happen. Things like careers, new products, Go to market plans, investments of time or money. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐜𝐮𝐭. Think about reducing the feedback delay. You may have to think hard, but it can be done. Look for early indicators. Rework your process. A good hint here is to 𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐩𝐭 𝐀𝐠𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬, which are all about reducing feedback delays. Reducing the delay is a better bet than polishing your strategy.

The late Charlie Munger was a great thinker, who built his and Berkshire Hathaway's success not just on an investment philosophy, but on a holistic decision-making system. During his 45-year tenure, BRK achieved a compounded annual return of 20% - double that of the S&P 500. In a new article, Martin Reeves, Ramsay Collins, and Adam Job outline four ideas that leaders can learn from Munger:

Helping millions of small businesses access capital is a big goal and not one you can achieve with wishful thinking. It takes innovative products that meaningfully change how that capital access actually works. It’s great to see our team at Pipe getting recognized for all the hard work we are doing to build those products 🚀 #smb #capital #pipe #product

Why is strategy so elusive for organizations to solidify and then implement? It all comes down to the investment in management! Hear me out… An engineer would never design a system without taking into account the effects of mechanical friction. Similarly according to Carl von Clausewitz’s, military endeavors cannot succeed without accounting for human, organizational, and situational friction. The problem is found in accounting for the variables of friction when it comes to human endeavors such as war. The attempt to account for all possibilities results in critical delays that jeopardize the entire endeavor. This is why army’s need officers! Now translate this to business. In his book The Art of Action, Stephen Bungay writes: “If Clausewitz is right, no one should develop a strategy without taking into account the affects of organizational friction. Yet we continue to be surprised and frustrated when it manifests itself. We tend to think everything has gone wrong when in fact everything has gone normally. The existence of friction is why armys need officers and businesses need managers. Anticipating and dealing with it form the core of managerial work.” As a leader, what are you doing today to establish strategy for your team, and then train and empower them to handle the inevitable friction that develops as a byproduct of implementing it? I highly recommend the book, The Art of Action, if you want a deep dive into organizational dynamics, and action oriented strategy!

A timely article that is very consistent with what I am seeing around the market. Organic growth remains a challenge for even the best software products. As a result the operating levers of value are increasingly important, and pricing is the most powerful one available to management and investors. https://lnkd.in/eJhPPKbh

One of the world's largest canyons, the #GrandCanyon in Arizona sits along the Colorado River and is one of the Wonders of the World. It has stunning layers of red rock that attract more than 6 million visitors yearly. More than 6 million visitors per year travel to take in the breathtaking layered bands of red rock. The Transcanyon Waterline, built in 1970, provides water to the Grand Canyon's millions of tourists and local communities. The 12.5-mile water line has had over 85 major breaks since 2010 that have affected water delivery. The National Park Service selected Bentley user HDR to design the replacement of the water system. Reaching depths of over a mile and containing some of the earth’s most severe topography, the Grand Canyon presented many logistical challenges. HDR used drones to collect visual and point cloud data to create a reality modeling solution to design the improved #water #infrastructure accurately. Providing the information digitally eliminated the expense for manual surveys, saving approximately 1,000 resource hours, and reducing design contingency by approximately 5%. The TCWL replacement is expected to be finished in 2027. Once completed the new water delivery system will meet the water demand for the next 50-plus years, while preserving natural and cultural resources, keeping the visitor experience, and lowering maintenance requirements. #bentleysystems #itwin #digitaltwins #iot #itwiniot #infrastructureiot
