For those who missed it, Java.IL event for May 29 is set and will include three great lectures: 1. Natan Silnitsky from Wix will explain how Wix started with classic CRUD over a Relational Database, during its massive growth phase transitioned to a method called CQRS, and recently moved to CRUD with Event Sourcing. Those who want to understand why should definitely attend this event. I highly recommend it. 2. Ben from Intuit will explain how they implemented a Distributed Rate Limiter over Redis using a library called Bucket4j. 3. Yaron also from Intuit will explain about an open-source library he wrote so they could extract data items from GraphQL Result Node similar to XPath. It supports local LLM providers like Ollama, LM Studio, and GPT4All, as well as cloud-based options like OpenAI, Mistral, Anthropic, Groq, and DeepInfra. The plugin, introduced by Stephan Janssen in April 2024, requires JDK 17 and IntelliJ IDEA 2023.3.4. As a Data Enthusiast, 🔍 Exploring Distributed File Systems vs. Object-Based Storage 🔍 As data management needs grow, understanding the difference between distributed file systems and object-based storage is crucial. Here’s a quick overview: Distributed File System: Structure: Hierarchical: Files are organized in directories and subdirectories. Path-Based Access: Files are accessed using file paths (e.g., /folder/subfolder/file.txt). How it Works: Files are split into pieces and stored across multiple servers. A master node keeps track of where each piece of a file is stored. If one server fails, the system can still retrieve the file from other servers. Advantages: 1. Familiarity: Users accustomed to traditional file systems find it easy to use. 2. Versatility: Can handle a variety of file sizes and types efficiently. 3. Redundancy: Ensures data availability and reliability. Examples: Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) Google File System (GFS) Network File System (NFS) Object-Based Storage Structure: Flat: No folders or directories; all data is stored as objects in a single namespace. ID-Based Access: Objects are accessed using unique identifiers rather than paths. How it Works: Each object includes data, metadata (information about the data), and a unique identifier. Rich metadata provides detailed information about each object, making it easier to manage and search. Objects are spread across multiple servers and data centers for high scalability and redundancy. Advantages: 1. Scalability: Designed to handle massive amounts of data efficiently. 2. Metadata: Rich metadata makes managing, searching, and retrieving data easy. 3. Cost-Effective: Often cheaper to scale than traditional file systems. Examples: Amazon S3 Google Cloud Storage OpenStack Swift Key Differences 1. Structure: Distributed File System is hierarchical and path-based; Object-Based Storage is flat and ID-based. 2. Metadata: Distributed File System has limited metadata; Object-Based Storage has rich metadata. 3. Scalability: Distributed File System can scale but becomes complex and expensive; Object-Based Storage is designed for massive scalability. 4. Access: Distributed File System is accessed via file paths; Object-Based Storage is accessed via unique object IDs. 5. #SkybearNET Scripts landing page and Business plan - Changelog 2024-07-21 🥳 It's time for another changelog update for the past few weeks. #SkybearNET is a managed platform to automate your HTTP API synthetics testing using Hurl plain text scripts (and other formats soon). Use it for testing your HTTP APIs on-demand or periodically, or use it as a complex orchestrator for a sequence of HTTP requests that need to be executed in order using data from previous ones at specific times of the day. In this changelog update I cover some small UX improvements, the new product landing page and resources I used to guide me through its design and structure, and the new pricing Business plan and my thinking process around it. How Allegro reduced Kafka producer latency by 82%(summary) 👇 1. Allegro uses Kafka for asynchronous communication between its microservices. 2. To pinpoint the problem, engineers analyzed network traffic on selected Kafka brokers to understand latencies related to file system operations. 3. Engineers discovered that tail latencies (p99 and p999) were up to 3 seconds. 4. They used the ext4slower tool, which provides tracing for ext4, Linux’s default file system, async-profiler and other #ebpf tools 5. Journal commits were identified as the main cause of such latencies. 6. The team explored different possible optimizations with the ext4 file system. 7. While exploring improvements around different file system journaling mechanisms and settings in ext4, the engineers found suggestions about the XFS file system offering more advanced journaling.
