Really interesting finding from a report published today by the Page Society on the growing remit of Chief Communications Officers: "61% of CCOs had formal responsibility for corporate brand in 2020...that has increased to nearly three-quarters — by far the most significant new area of focus for CCOs. This reflects the growing understanding by corporate leaders that, while marketers are experts at product brand, it is the corporate brand, much like corporate character, that is about expressing a unique, differentiated identity in a consistent and authentic way. Stop falling in love with channels and tactics. Email, social, intent, gifting, search, targeted FB ads, ABM, roadshows, events, virtual events, webinars...any given one is sometimes the savior, other times declared "dead." If you walk around saying "email and webinars are dead, no one cares about them anymore", sorry, but you are not a serious marketer. Example one: many people believe "everything is about intent signals now." In a discussion yesterday, intent sounded suspiciously like lead scoring, ie judging the readiness of a prospect based on interpretation of their online and offline behavior. Combined with ABM, which sounds suspiciously like target account marketing. (Intent and ABM are great tactics if they work for your audience, BTW, and there are fantastic software solutions for both). Example two: if we're marketing to SaaS, we're way to cool to use the word "webinar" anymore, because it sounds like a middle-aged guy with a combover. So we call it a "virtual summit" instead and pretend we've invented something new. But there are audiences that love webinars and don't see them as dated as all. You won't get very far marketing to them by despising the things they like, believe me. So stop falling in love with channels and tactics. Start falling in love with your audiences. Learn to love the tactics and channels they love. Bring your own spin to it, of course...and sometimes you can differentiate by introducing tactics that are new to them. Learning to love new audiences is the only sustainable competitive advantage you have as a marketer. Everything else is noise. Are we truly measuring what matters in B2B marketing? I recently had the pleasure of discussing the future of B2B digital marketing on the Mi3Australia podcast with Kerry Cunningham and Andrew Haussegger. In today’s complex buying environment, not all leads are created equal. We can be more strategic and impactful by moving beyond counting leads to measuring influence. It is this influence that ultimately drives conversion and revenue. New research from 6sense shows that B2B buyers are already well into their decision-making process before we even identify them as leads. This means we need to engage with buyers much earlier and target entire buying groups rather than focusing on individuals. Fostering a deeper collaboration between sales and marketing is crucial. This alignment ensures that we focus on genuine opportunities rather than mere lead counts, paving the way for meaningful success. Thanks Paul McIntyre for having me on the podcast. Getting back into B2B communications can take a minute after spending a few years at a big tech consumer company. Here are some quick tips to help with the transition, especially as people take on new career paths given the times we are in: Get your hands on updated data: Company data should be accessible and understandable for everyone, particularly communications teams, who play a pivotal role in initiating the sales process by building awareness. This data should be updated in real time and be straightforward enough that it doesn't require a PhD to understand a spreadsheet, eliminating the need for downloading or taking screenshots, which can instantly render the data outdated. When Comms teams can easily access fresh sales data, they can align their efforts with sales goals more efficiently. Listen to recorded demos and calls: Recorded calls provide immediate insights into frequent product questions. This helps improve internal FAQs, identify existing product gaps, and prepare for press interviews. Additionally, reviewing these recordings can improve your understanding of how your product compares to competitors and clarify your market advantages. Attend sales planning to listen and learn: Ask to be added to upcoming sales planning meetings as they offer an excellent opportunity for communicators to listen and catch a glimpse of the company's projected direction for the year. This helps Comms professionals design targeted campaigns that support sales initiatives and align with overall business objectives. Schedule a weekly go-to-market (GTM) call: Organize a GTM call with key team contributors for alignment. Include a dedicated update section from sales in these meetings to keep teams informed about the business. 👀 the competition: No brainer - monitor competitors on social media to understand market positioning, products and their strategies. Keep a log every time a competitor says "revolutionizing," "next-gen," or boasts about a LLM tool without explaining how they're ensuring responsible use of customer data. And then make a personal commitment to never do the same, as this kind of positioning harms the industry's credibility.
