I've spent the last few months digging into evolving research on the motherhood penalty. Women aren't wrong to suspect they'll pay a real economic price for having kids at younger ages, but those tradeoffs could also change with policy and culture. Tens of thousands of houses of worship could close in the next decade due to declining membership + rising costs. Building much-needed affordable housing on that land could provide these institutions with some new revenue streams, and/or ways to cement their mission-oriented legacies when they're gone. Building housing on land owned by religious institutions could also provide a way for cities to avoid the blight that comes from having large vacant properties — especially in smaller towns where the structures served as central civic anchors. A first-of-its-kind child care center opened up this year in San Diego, charging parents 50 percent less than market rate, and workers are paid 15 percent above local average. Hours are longer + more flexible. Only catch? You have to work for the San Diego Police Department I wrote about the police childcare model, which is spreading across the country. There's already a bipartisan bill in Congress to support it. Is it a good idea? Advocates think it'll help with recruitment, retention, and boosting women in the field. I wrote about what Joe Biden can learn from Harry Truman and LBJ, two presidents who chose not to run for reelection: “There is a lure in power,” Harry Truman wrote in 1950, two years before he publicly announced that he would not seek another term. “It can get into a man's blood just as gambling and lust for money have been known to do.” Power can distort someone’s view of reality, making them believe they’re invincible or somehow not bound by the basic rules of biology. But while that makes power all the more seductive, it’s not impossible to break its spell. After all, for well over a century before there were term limits, American presidents tended to know when to call it quits: If they weren’t killed or voted out, they voluntarily bowed out after serving two terms — that is, until Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected in 1932 and won four consecutive terms.
