"Legacy players in the space have only focused on step one of the entire incident management process — which is simply getting paged. Too many companies were paying a lot of money for this rudimentary ability. So now you get this feature with Rootly On-Call, but it's combined with our holistic platform that is collecting data throughout the entire lifecycle, through incident resolution." - JJ Tang for International Business Times Thank you to IBT Media for this piece highlighting Rootly is ushering in a modern era of incident management tooling 🚀 https://lnkd.in/dusDy3Vy

Pretty much every Rootly user is familiar with essential Slack commands like /rootly new (creates an incident), /rootly resolve (resolves an incident), and /rootly update (update an incident's details). But you might be surprised to know we have a ton more useful commands, including the new /rootly lookup, which pulls up a list of your 10 most recent active incidents with the ability to filter by affected service. This means you can easily check for ongoing or recent incidents that could be related, and quickly consolidate efforts or identify troubleshooting steps that have been effective elsewhere. To learn more about /rootly lookup and other Slack commands, check out this week's changelog! https://lnkd.in/gYKvez5R

"Is DevOps dead?" is a question we've seen pop up across the tech sphere in outlets like The New Stack and TechTarget. We asked industry expert Nathen Harvey (DORA Lead & Developer Advocate at Google) and he offered a sincere and nuanced answer on the evolution of DevOps and related crafts. "I think that when you kind of get down to the first principles and the fundamentals of DevOps, or SRE or Platform Engineering, it's all about how we can improve the lives of the people that we're working with and provide better value through the use of technology. It would be wrong to say that those labels don't matter though because they absolutely do—it helps us identify our community and describe our work. But it will always evolve over time—after “Platform Engineer” there will be a new term. Either way, we’re all working together to deliver the same value" - Nathen Harvey

Today is a great day to remember that behind every software system, there are real people who work hard to keep it online and fix it when things go wrong. It's a tough job that requires deep subject matter expertise, technical knowledge, resourcefulness, and grit. And like every job, it has its good days and bad. Whichever one you're having, you do your best, learn from your mistakes, and push forward. We started our Humans of Reliability series to showcase the people dedicated to software reliability, and share their wisdom with the world in a fun and casual format. If there's a little too much doom and gloom out there for you today, we hope these conversations will leave you feeling lighter! We've got two brand new episodes for you today: Nathen Harvey - DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) Lead and Developer Advocate at Google Cloud, and all round lovely guy. We chatted about the DORA community, why DevOps is most certainly not "dead", and how he turned his passion for developer community into a full time job. Zameel Syed - VP Site Reliability & Security Engineering at Aircall and 30 year veteran of the tech industry shared his hard-earned wisdom on why security and reliability teams should work hand in hand, what he learned from his first time causing an incident, and his experience as a mentor for Aircall's gender equity employee resource group. #HugOps from your friends at Rootly and the Humans of Reliability! https://lnkd.in/gByTQ2xq

Don't throw your new responders into the deep end without a life vest. Building the confidence to handle incidents effectively takes real-world experience. Having new team members shadow experienced responders is one of the most effective ways to build psychological safety and ultimately create better incident responders. Shadowing isn't a new practice, but actually setting up a shadow rotation has traditionally been cumbersome—manually duplicating schedules, mentally calculating time zones, and all sorts of other annoying challenges. We do shadowing differently at Rootly: 😵💫 No manually duplicating schedules 📆 Set time frames for shadowing (start/end dates, weekend and evening exemptions, etc) 🧑🤝🧑 Set up shadows for multiple users at once 😅 Won't mess up your existing coverage Check out our latest changelog post to see our native Shadows feature. https://lnkd.in/ghqZkEyQ

I'm looking forward to speaking at #DevOpsDays London on Sept 27 alongside a fantastic speaker lineup. I'll be talking about why playbooks aren't the 'be all end all' of IM process, and what to do about it ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gqB4Zbku "How many of us have walked away from a retrospective where “update X playbook” accounted for the bulk of the post-incident learning? As we establish and evolve our incident response programs, playbooks are a useful tool to document information and build consistency. But they also can easily become a dumping ground for rigid process and oversimplified approaches that don’t work in the ambiguous and complex real world incidents we experience. In this talk, I’ll break down three pillars for building incident response programs that build consistency and alignment while leaving room for judgement and agility."
