Jim Alkove joined Julian Lee from eChannel News to discuss how the evolving #cybersecurity threat landscape challenges trust paradigms and presents new concerns for defenders. The two talk about how #AI is an increasing component of attack tactics — and why AI must also play a central role in defending against evolving threats.
How could the AT&T breach related to lack of MFA on Snowflake have been prevented? 1) Software vendors must require multi-factor authentication for anyone who accesses their software. The lack of MFA on customer accounts in Snowflake allowed bad actors to use stolen credentials to access AT&T systems. Similar security gaps allowed attackers to breach the Snowflake accounts of Advanced Auto Parts, Lending Tree, Live Nation and Santander Bank. 2) Organizations need visibility to enforce MFA across their entire SaaS estate. It’s one thing to mandate via your identity platform’s single sign-on capabilities, but you need to enforce that MFA is turned on across all accounts including non-single sign-on accounts. 3) Organizations need to remove dormant accounts and permissions – of which 95% go unused (Microsoft). In the AT&T breach, bad actors used a set of years-dormant third-party credentials — not to hack in, but to simply log in. At Oleria, we practice what we preach: We are mandating customers MFA for every account accessing Oleria’s software. Internally, we use the end-to-end visibility of Oleria Adaptive Security to ensure MFA enforcement and remove dormant accounts across our SaaS estate. And we enable our customers to do the same. The #cybersecurity world — and the broader #SaaS industry — needs to change. We cannot tolerate breaches that can be avoided. Let’s start today. We’re challenging other SaaS companies to follow Oleria’s lead in mandating MFA for all users — and not charging extra for critical features like MFA, single sign-on, or log access.
