Conserving water and enhancing your landscape can be achieved by incorporating native plants. Not only do they add natural beauty and require minimal upkeep, but they also play a significant role in water conservation. We are proud to partner with Tarrant Regional Water District and City of Dallas in this regional public awareness campaign, Texas Yard Makeover Weekend Edition, to encourage the efficient use of water and reduce water demand in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

About us
About Us: The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) is a regional provider of water, wastewater and solid waste disposal services. The NTMWD serves a population of 2 million residents in 80 communities across the north Texas counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Fannin, Grayson, Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, Rains, and Rockwall – a service territory covering 2,200 square miles. History: In 1946, local leaders from ten cities formed the Tri-County Reservoir Association (TCRA) to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to build Lavon Lake for flood control and water storage. By request of the TCRA, the Texas Legislature authorized the formation of the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) in 1951 to develop, finance, construct, and operate facilities to meet future water needs for the region. The 10 original cities - Farmersville, Forney, Garland, McKinney, Mesquite, Plano, Princeton, Rockwall, Royse City, and Wylie - became the original Member Cities, each with representation on our Board of Directors. Three additional cities were added including Richardson (1973), Allen (1998), and Frisco (2001). We also provide treated water service to 33 Customers (cities and other special/municipal utility districts) and indirectly serve 46 other communities who purchase water from our Member Cities and Customers. We began offering wastewater treatment services in the 1970s and solid waste disposal services in the 1980s. We also operate the largest man-made wetlands in the country - a vital water reuse project that helps to naturally polish treated wastewater, supplement our water supplies, and supports a valuable ecosystem to the region. Regional Service Through Unity… Meeting Our Region’s Needs Today and Tomorrow

We are thrilled to share that David Cowan, NTMWD Watershed Manager, is being honored this year at both the Regional level (nominated by Collin County SWCD) and the state level (by the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board) as a Friend of Conservation. Bois d’Arc Lake was decades in the making and with the completion of the Leonard Water Treatment Plant we began delivering potable water to our service area last year. While the recent rains in our area allowed us to open for public recreation last month, we’ve also now gotten to see the labyrinth weir and service spillway in action. Here are some quick facts about this important piece of infrastructure at Bois d’Arc Lake. · Bois d'Arc Lake was designed and built primarily as a water supply reservoir with recreational opportunities. · The Dam's service spillway has a 60-foot-wide, 3-cycle labyrinth weir with the set conservation pool elevation of 534 mean sea level (MSL). · Bois d’Arc Lake is not permitted and constructed for use as flood control reservoir and therefore does not deliberately store or release flood waters like many other lakes across Texas. · Once the lake reaches full capacity (534’ MSL) any inflows or floodwaters that enter the lake spill over through the lake’s service spillway and flow downstream. · Once Bois d’Arc Lake reached its full conservation pool last week, the water flowed over the spillway for the first time. · Unlike other area lakes like Lavon and Ray Hubbard, Lewisville, Bois d’Arc Lake is in the Red River Basin, meaning any overflow travels generally north into Honey Grove and Bois d'Arc Creeks, eventually reaching the Red River. · For safety reasons, the dam and spillway are not accessible to the public. Boaters and anglers are advised to follow the posted signage and not enter areas marked by floating buoys. See the spillway at work....

NTMWD water supplies include six North Texas reservoirs, which are all at 100% capacity due to recent rains. These lakes provide drinking water to over 2.2 million North Texans and we're fortunate to be in this position as we approach the hotter summer months when water demands are highest. Please do your part to help keep these reservoirs full for as long as possible by visiting WaterIsAwesome.com to see how you can conserve water and still have a healthy lawn and landscape.

Bois d'Arc Lake provides a vital new water source for our region, but its benefits extend beyond that. North Texas Municipal Water District partnered with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to make Bois d'Arc Lake a destination for anglers, and we're excited to see people enjoying fishing the lake after last week's recreational opening.
Texas has a new lake for the first time in nearly 30 years
