Fifty-two years ago this month, President Nixon signed the landmark equality legislation known as Title IX to ensure equal opportunities for girls and women to participate and excel in high school and college sports. This past Saturday, over 600 runners of all ages participated in the 3rd annual Nixon 5K for Title IX to commemorate the anniversary. The event kicked off with opening remarks from Congresswoman Young Kim and Mayor of Yorba Linda Tara Campbell, a flag salute by the Yorba Linda Girl Scout Honor Guard and the National Anthem performed by Madeline Smith, Miss Placentia 2024. Special thanks to this year’s title sponsor, UCI Health. Team Members from the local youth soccer team Fullerton Rangers FC led the run and cadets from the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy completed the course in cadence. The 5K course followed Yorba Linda’s El Cajon Trail with the starting and finishing line in front of the Nixon Library. During the event, a vendor fair with over thirty booths promoted local businesses, many of which promote health and fitness. Mark your calendars for next year’s Nixon 5K for Title IX: June 21, 2025!

Giant Pandas are returning to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.! Did you know that the first Giant Pandas arrived in America because of First Lady Pat Nixon? This initial act of panda diplomacy stemmed from First Lady Pat Nixon’s encounter with Giant Pandas at the Peking Zoo during the historic trip to the People’s Republic of China in February 1972. At a state banquet later in the trip, she noticed a picture of pandas on a cigarette container and remarked to Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai, “Aren’t they cute? I love them.” He responded, “I’ll give you some.” Just two months later, a pair of Giant Pandas, Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing, arrived to the National Zoo with great fanfare. News articles highlighted the extensive security for the furry ambassadors, and over 20,000 people joined First Lady Pat Nixon to welcome the pandas to their new home.

Earlier this week, Nixon Foundation Chairman Ambassador Robert C. O'Brien and Mrs. O’Brien visited Israel and laid flowers at the grave of a fallen IDF soldier who served in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. In October 1973, with Israeli troops seriously outnumbered and facing near-certain defeat at the hands of the Soviet-backed Arabs, President Nixon ordered an emergency airlift of supplies and materiel. “Send everything that will fly,” he told Dr. Henry Kissinger. The American airlift enabled Israel to launch a decisive counterattack. More on the 1973 Yom Kippur War here: https://lnkd.in/gzwdtASM

The final meeting of The Nixon Seminar will take place on June 4, 2024 in the East Room at the Nixon Presidential Library and you’re invited to join us! Nixon Foundation Board Member and former President and CEO Hugh Hewitt reflected on The Nixon Seminar yesterday for Fox News Media: “Over three years and more than two dozen meetings and at an annual Grand Strategy Summit in D.C. for the past two years, the [Nixon] Seminar members gathered to discuss, and often sharply though civilly debate, the most pressing issues of world security either among themselves or with guests like the late Dr. Kissinger or technologist Peter Thiel. There wasn’t the need for a huge think tank and redundant staff or a big building and fancy offices. This ‘think tank’ was virtual and it worked.” https://lnkd.in/gfrszGEg

    Strategic Counsel – Writer

Forty-seven years ago, May, 1977,  I was privileged to play a central role in the four historic 90-minute dialogues Richard Nixon had with British television host, David Frost – popularly known as the “Frost/Nixon Interviews.”  Condensed from nearly 29 hours of tapings, the opening broadcast on Watergate drew 45 million viewers – still the largest ever for a public affairs interview.  The former president asked me to break off from working on his memoirs to take the lead in preparation of his briefing books.  Future TV megastar, Diane Sawyer, was also on our staff and worked alongside as Watergate expert with former chief White House speechwriter, Ray Price proving depth and counsel.  I immersed in the preparation, briefings and tapings for three months – interacting closely with Nixon, Sawyer, and Frost’s team.  Frost/Nixon stands out  as one of the most electric chapters of my forthcoming memoir, due on July 23 and available for pre-order on my website www.reaganandnixon.com.  For the first time, readers will have an insider’s account from the Nixon team that can’t be found in Ron Howard’s movie, David Frost’s book, the Broadway play or the myriad other accounts that lack my behind-the-scenes access.  Chapter 3 of my memoir is a portrayal of internal turmoil, intrigue, intensity, and drama that culminated in the compelling interviews.  Pictured here are the massive briefing books prepared by our team – with Sawyer, me and Price alongside the Boss. The photo gives added meaning to the title of my book:  “Behind Closed Doors – In the Room with Reagan and Nixon,” also available on Amazon. https://amzn.to/466eseZ
