The training for operators and maintainers of the Navy’s E-6B Mercury fleet has launched into the 21st century thanks to new virtual 3D training systems provided by NAVAIR’s Airborne Strategic Command, Control and Communications Program Office (PMA-271), the Naval Aviation Training Systems and Ranges Program Office (PMA-205), the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training and the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD). They include the new Multi-Purpose Reconfigurable Training System (MRTS) 3D Panel Trainers, interactive simulators that model and provide troubleshooting scenarios for various aircraft systems. The MRTS Maintenance Trainers and Virtual Checklist Trainers improve training, reduce risk and save money by providing hands-on instruction in a classroom rather than on the aircraft. They allow maintainers and operators to train for the mission, even when fleet aircraft are unavailable due to mission requirements. Maintenance is critical to sustaining the 37-year-old E-6 fleet, which flies missions critical to our nation’s nuclear deterrence. Better training = improved capabilities. Col. Kate Fleeger, Program Manager for the H-53 Heavy Lift Helicopters Program Office (PMA) 261 speaks with an Amfuel quality manager in front of a fuel bladder working through the production process at the plant in Magnolia, Arkansas. Amfuel is the sole source provider of fuel bladders for the CH-53K King Stallion. While at Amfuel, Fleeger spoke with management and production floor personnel. She also got to see the successful results of several NAVAIR investments in the company’s production line.

After a long 18 months, NAVAIR’s USMC Light/Attack Helicopter family (https://lnkd.in/e7hyNieT) welcomes back, Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269 which was reactivated on July 1. The squadron returns after the Marine Corps conducted analysis on force management and identified the need for an additional HMLA squadron on the East Coast. HMLA-269 will resume operating the AH-1Z “Viper” attack helicopter and the UH-1Y “Venom” utility helicopter to provide operational support to II Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF). https://lnkd.in/ecYtKs3h

Cue the applause! RADM John Lemmon, Program Executive Officer for Tactical Aircraft Programs, presented Ron Ferguson with a Meritorious Civilian Service Award for his lasting impact on the AV-8B Weapon Systems Program Office (PMA-257). As the PMA-257 product support manager, Ron’s knowledge of logistics requirements and the naval supply system as well as his sustainment prowess were key to the success of the program office. His leadership and commitment to excellence provided operating forces with ready, reliable and relevant AV-8B Harrier aircraft.

A retired AV-8B II+ Harrier aircraft found a new home at the Hickory Aviation Museum of North Carolina July 15. AV-8B Weapon Systems Program Office, the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, and others teamed up to bring this piece of history to the museum and prep it for display. VMA-223 Commanding Officer Lt. Col. John Cumbie flew the aircraft to the museum where visitors can learn about its unique engineering design and capabilities. The AV-8B is a vertical/short takeoff and landing, light attack jet that serves the U.S. Marine Corps and the Italian and Spanish Navies. Navy Midshipmen get a taste of heavy lift – Each summer Midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy visit Naval Air Station Patuxent River to see the test environment in action. These visits expose students to the vast array of test opportunities within the Navy and help them determine career paths. The CH-53 Heavy Lift Helicopters Program Office (PMA) 261 was very happy to introduce them to the newest U.S. Marine Corps heavy lift asset – the CH-53K King Stallion — currently undergoing digital interoperability testing.
