An affordably housed nation.
About us
For more than 50 years, state Housing Finance Agencies (HFAs) have played a central role in the nation’s affordable housing system, delivering financing to make possible the purchase, development, and rehabilitation of affordable homes and rental apartments for low- and middle-income households. The National Council of State Housing Agencies (NCSHA) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization created to advance, through advocacy and education, the efforts of the nation’s state HFAs and their partners to provide affordable housing to those who need it. NCSHA’s members are: • the state HFAs, as well as the HFAs of the District of Columbia, New York City, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands; • the agencies that allocate the Low Income Housing Tax Credit in the states where an HFA does not; and • more than 350 affiliate members in the affordable housing field. NCSHA’s Mission To advance through advocacy and education the nation’s state Housing Finance Agencies’ efforts to provide affordable housing to those who need it. NCSHA’s Vision An affordably housed nation.

National Council of State Housing Agencies (NCSHA) reposted this
The Federal Housing Finance Agency held a daylong symposium last week to explore how Federal Home Loan Banks can work more with CDFIs. The session was part of FHFA’s continuing review of the Bank system’s effectiveness and its assessment of what else its members can do to support affordable housing and community development. Now, FHFA should devote similar attention to another national network of mission-focused financing institutions with even broader reach: state HFAs. In fact, the Banks and HFAs have worked together for decades. At least 20 HFAs have received Bank advances to provide liquidity to their affordable homeownership housing bonds and mortgage-backed securities. Bank Affordable Housing Program funds often support multifamily housing development financed by HFAs, too. It’s time to activate the full potential of that relationship.
