MnDOT is launching a new research project to detect bat species in culverts and bridges. The project will sample and collect bat guano on test sites to help develop protocols for identifying bat presence before maintenance starts. “This research will help streamline Endangered Species Act project reviews and avoid costly avoidance requirements such as seasonal work restrictions,” said Christopher Smith, protected species program coordinator, MnDOT Office of Environmental Stewardship. This project is led by Ron Moen, Raphael Stern, and Jessica Sieber with the University of Minnesota and Christopher Smith with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. https://lnkd.in/gBTHxeyR

MnDOT is excited to support local communities with public-private partnerships! On June 20, a new public space was unveiled under our bridges near Target Field—the North Loop Green. Enjoy green spaces, a stage, dining areas, and year-round events like movie nights, yoga, and festivals. This unique project makes great use of underutilized space. Last week, a new group of students in the MnDOT Civil Engineering Student Worker Program (CEP) met at the University of Minnesota to kick off their summer work experience. The students learned about how the Center for Transportation Studies, University of Minnesota (CTS) partners with MnDOT to improve Minnesota transportation. Students also had the opportunity to tour the Human Factors Safety Lab, a CTS facility, to see how engineering and psychology can be used to improve people's lives. While on the tour students got to experience an immersive driver simulator and see the MnCAV Ecosystem van, a level-two autonomous vehicle the lab uses for research in partnership with MnDOT.
