💰Fundraising Challenges in Gaming 🎮 In our latest newsletter, we delve into the challenges of raising capital for gaming companies as we near the end of July 2024. Despite $14B invested in 2021-2022, only $2.7B was invested in 2023. VCs are prioritizing AI, many are between funds, and high interest rates are driving down valuations. Looking ahead, we predict slow gaming investments through early 2025, with AI investment cooling by then. Our Konvoy Q2 2024 Report is now available! Explore the latest insights on private market funding, public market data, and key industry themes shaping the gaming landscape. This report includes: - Gaming market size to reach $189.3b in 2024 (+2.9% YoY) - Gaming VC funding: $492m in Q2 2024, -20% QoQ - Gaming VC deal volume: 104 deals completed in Q2 2024, -22% QoQ -Despite lagging growth and late-stage deal activity, early-stage funding is continuing to surge back - Q2-24 saw the highest early-stage deal funding since Q4-2020 ($480m) -With the exception of Q4-23, ~90% or more of all Gaming VC funding has been invested into early-stage deals since Q4-22 -The Gaming VC market is showing indicators of becoming more sustainable (less mega-deal driven): 22% of deals have made up 80% of disclosed deal funding (vs 12-13% in 2020-2021) -Gaming continues to perform well in the public markets: ESPO (tracks the MVIS Global Video Gaming and eSports Index, MVESPOTR) is +19.7% YTD vs the S&P 500 (+15.1%) YouTube and LinkedIn also both made significant pushes into gaming in Q2-2024: -In May, LinkedIn launched their first 3 games on the platform with the intention of “spark[ing] conversations and friendly competition among professionals around the world.” -Konvoy's opinion: While this has the potential to help retention, it is unclear if games and the value that they provide are congruent with LinkedIn’s value proposition as a company. We do not believe that they will be able to follow the "NYT playbook" (making games not only where users spend the most time but also a significant revenue driver) -In May, YouTube formally announced that 75 games were available to play on YouTube. This is Google’s first push into gaming since the collapse of its cloud streaming service Stadia.
