Happy Juneteenth! Today, we celebrate a pivotal date in American history that marked the end of slavery and the rebirth of the American republic. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas. They carried the message that all slaves were free and that there was “absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves.” This holiday itself is a testament to the power of advocacy and the impact of dedicated individuals. One such individual is Opal Lee, affectionately known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth." The first celebrations of Juneteenth were used as political rallies and to teach freed African Americans about their voting rights. Opal's tireless campaign and unwavering efforts led to the official recognition of Juneteenth as a national holiday in 2021. At Karp Strategies, our mission to build better cities and communities can only be achieved through active participation and community empowerment. Inspired by activists like Opal Lee’s legacy, we remain dedicated to fostering democratic and participatory processes in all our work. Congratulations to Studio Gang, the NYC Department of Design and Construction, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), and all the partners who contributed to this milestone. As the Community Engagement Consultant, Karp Strategies is thrilled to have played a part in this incredible project. The Marlboro Agricultural Education Center (MAEC) will serve as a new hub for multigenerational education, job training, and community leadership in nutrition and urban agriculture. We are proud to support such impactful initiatives that strengthen our communities. #KarpStrategies #UrbanAgriculture #CommunityLeadership #SustainableDevelopment #EnvironmentalDesign #CommunityEngagement #Brooklyn #MarlboroHouses #StakeholderEngagement
Over the weekend we broke ground on the Marlboro Agricultural Education Center (MAEC), a new hub for multigenerational education, job training, and community leadership in nutrition and urban agriculture! The new building, located in Brooklyn’s Gravesend neighborhood, brings diverse, community-orientated programs to the western edge of Marlboro Houses. Guided by the mission of its nonprofit operator, The Campaign Against Hunger (TCAH), the Center builds on long running efforts across the city to strengthen food autonomy and security in underserved neighborhoods. Inside, the greenhouse on the upper level will use a combination of hydroponics and aquaponics to grow nutritious leafy greens that will be distributed to neighbors, used in the teaching kitchen, and eventually sold at local farmers markets. Outside, the design strengthens connections with the surrounding neighborhood and campus through generous sidewalk frontage and large windows that reveal the activities within. A central, accessible entrance and public terrace with plantings and seating invites people to explore the building. Congratulations to all of our partners! NYC Department of Design and Construction, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), The Campaign Against Hunger, Consigli Construction Co., Inc., Eponymous Practice, Thornton Tomasetti, Philip Habib and Associates, Langan Consulting Engineers, Bala Consulting Engineers, Renfro Design Group, Urban Arborists Inc, VDA Elevator and Escalator Consulting, Karp Strategies, Hopkins Foodservice Specialists, Inc., Agritecture, Prospiant Learn more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/eX7y3AWM
