Have you or a family member been a recent victim of a shooting? In June, Mayor Johnson showed his “commitment to investing in people” by announcing the expansion of the Emergency Supplemental Victim’s Fund (ESVF) from 5 communities to 15 with increased funding to $10M. Since its inception in 2022, the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago has supported over 120 individuals & families in West Garfield Park by providing over $155,000 in financial support from the ESVF. This support eases the financial burden and trauma that shootings cause. Kevin Edwards, a shooting victim from West Garfield Park, says the support allowed him to pay bills while he was recovering. With the expansion, we can now offer the same assistance to victims in Austin and Back of the Yards, while partner organizations support their communities. Everything we do is focused on ending the cycle of gun violence.
About us
Everything the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago does is focused on ending the cycle of gun violence. We work in areas of Chicago where gun violence is highest, and we deploy evidence-based strategies that have worked in Boston, New York, L.A., and other cities. We aim to help individuals who are most likely to carry a gun or get shot lead lives of nonviolence, foster healing, and actively promote peace. Our robust continuum of care is designed to help participants regulate emotions, restore mental health, and obtain living-wage jobs in the legal economy. Dr. King’s vision guides our hearts, and his teachings inform our efforts. Practicing King’s philosophy provides us with the tools to earn trust and calm conflict. It offers Chicago a courageous approach to healing by addressing trauma at its root causes. This affords us the opportunity to build a sustainable peace, rather than shift the violence to another neighborhood or to the prison system.

Mr. Cedric dedication to young people and their families inspired a city and a state. Whether caught in cycles of violence or dreaming of college and opportunity, he was an advocate, a mentor, a tough-love guide, and a mediator. He ran a recreation center and was a key sport and safety coordinator at the Met Schools. In addition he was a founding board member at the Nonviolence Institute in Providence (NVI) and also served three years as its Executive Director. Mr. Cedric helped unite and heal the community, improve relationships with law enforcement and other systems interacting with the community. He was a mentor, confidant and close friend, influencing the work of INVC. He was and remains an example to aspire to emulate. We honor his legacy today. https://lnkd.in/gFEm2pjF #choosepeace #nonviolence #leadership #legacy
