Peach tomato panzanella salad, anyone? It's as mouthwateringly delicious and refreshing as it sounds! Parents and kids had an absolute blast preparing it with our wonderful FRESHFARM partners. Just in time for July 4th, the FRESHFARM team spent a delightful afternoon at Kidspace, showing the kids how to whip up this scrumptious salad. They chopped juicy tomatoes, tore aromatic basil leaves, and shook up vinaigrette – turning it into an impromptu dance party! Thank you to FRESHFARM—our amazing Kidspace partners for five fantastic years! From cultivating an edible garden with the kids to hosting fun-filled cooking demos, they spread the joy of gardening and cooking to kids and parents alike.

Walking in someone else's shoes? Not an opportunity that many of us receive in life. Fitting someone for a new pair of shoes... 👟 Now that is something that can and did happen. Last month, House of Ruth teamed up with It's From The Sole and Kinnect Foundation (KITH) to bring a sneaker store experience to the women participating in House of Ruth programs. Over 100 brand-new pairs of HOKA shoes were donated. Each woman was personally fitted for a pair and walked out not only with those sneakers but also socks. Kneeling before these women--learning how to fit someone for sneakers--helping each woman fit just the right fit. I cannot begin to describe what that experience meant. How connected I felt to each woman. Thank you, Andre Mcdonnell, Francess Henry, and Sharifa Murdock for making this event possible! We look forward to our next partnership.

As Joan Marques stated, "The thrill of taking lasts a day. The thrill of giving lasts a lifetime." Although we're over a week out, I am STILL living with the thrill of Impact Day 2024!    On June 7th, 2024, Deloitte celebrated the 25th anniversary of #ImpactDay. I had the honor of co-leading a site this year with Jenna Flack: Women's Career Kickstarter (WCK)! The mission of this site is to empower women transitioning into the workforce with the tools to build a foundation to jumpstart their careers.   Activities included resume writing, mock interviews, and facilitating a branding workshop. Additionally, we offered make-up and photoshoot services to help clients look and feel their best! As a new offering, we organized a clothing drive, and partnered with Suited For Change who offered elegant styling services and professional attire to each attendee. Thank you for coming out House of Ruth, New Hope Housing, and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington. The work you do is outstanding, and has eternal impact - we celebrate you.    Special shout out to the WCK Power Team: Carlena O. and Neisha Harewood Bailey, MBA and to Olivia Termini for your leadership in organizing the styling experience! Thank you to all the Deloitte volunteers who shared their skills, experience and time to make this a success. #DeloitteImpactDay #ImpactDay2024 #ImpactThatMatters

Last week, a Turkish delegation of doctors and psychologists, who are visiting the US through the US Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program, spent a morning with House of Ruth leadership and program managers.    Our teams exchanged valuable knowledge on planning for and responding to gender-based violence in disaster scenarios. Following a robust conversation, the delegation toured Kidspace, our nationally accredited child and family development center. The tour included our therapy observation rooms, where families receive multi-generational therapy through our partnership with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.    A highlight of the morning: When no interpretation was needed as these clinical experts spoke the shared language of their profession. Thank you to our partners at the U.S. Department of State and American Councils for International Education for bringing us together! We look forward to more opportunities to meet with our peers across the globe.

Case Manager at House of Ruth | Psychology & Justice and Law Alumna from American University | Frederick Douglass Honors Scholarship Recipient

Today, I am celebrating so much more than just my first work anniversary at House of Ruth. Today, I am celebrating the program participants and their families whom I have assisted in rebuilding and remediating their debt, receiving mental health and disability services, securing stable income and employment, pursuing higher education, and saving enough money to transition to independently rented housing. One of the achievements I take with the most pride is witnessing one of my participants walk the stage at her graduation. Though its simplicity, I hold great joy in having the honor to witness her growth and journey to this achievement. Since the first few days of my beginning education, I have dedicated every piece of knowledge and work to a life of service. I am happy this was able to blossom further in my first year at House of Ruth. I want to extend a special congratulations to Kahdesha Chiles for being an incredible co-worker, mentor, and friend during my first year here - I could not have done it without you. Feeling thankful for this #workmilestone

We recently joined forces with It's From The Sole and Kinnect Foundation (KITH) to provide over 100 brand-new, HOKA shoes to the incredible women participating in House of Ruth housing programs. Our participants enjoyed a premium shoe experience—receiving personalized fittings to ensure the perfect size and also new pairs of socks. With sizes ranging from women's 3 to 14, every woman was represented and cared for. For many, this was their first pair of reliable, high-performing shoes—a transformative gift that brings both comfort and confidence. At House of Ruth, our mission is to empower women, children, and families to rebuild their lives and heal from trauma, abuse, and houselessness. This event showcases the remarkable power of community partnerships and the profound impact of in-kind support. These contributions are vital in helping us meet immediate needs and provide essential resources for our participants on their journey to independence and stability. A huge thank you to Andre Mcdonnell, Francess Henry, and Sharifa Murdock for making this event possible. Your generous collaboration and support have made a significant difference in the lives of the women we serve.
