About us
Healthfirst, one of New York’s largest not-for-profit health insurance companies, has earned the trust of close to 2 million members by ensuring access to affordable and high-quality healthcare. Sponsored by downstate New York’s leading hospital systems, Healthfirst’s unique advantage is rooted in its mission to put members first by partnering closely with its broad network of providers on shared goals. Healthfirst is also a pioneer of the value-based care model, now recognized as a national best practice. For more than 30 years, Healthfirst has worked with its network of hospital systems, community providers, and partners to improve health outcomes and advance health equity through better access to care—especially in underserved communities adversely impacted by disease, health disparities, and socioeconomic barriers to optimal health. Healthfirst has built its reputation in the community for top-quality products and services New Yorkers can depend on. It offers market-leading products to fit every life stage, including Medicaid plans, Medicare Advantage plans, Long-Term Care plans, Qualified Health plans, Essential Plans, and individual and small group plans. Healthfirst has dynamic team members from across the organization that help keep our members happy and healthy. Today, meet Tikesha Hines an Appeals and Grievances Quality Assurance Team Leader on the Appeals and Grievances Quality Assurance Team at Healthfirst. Describe your career journey at Healthfirst and where you would like to see it go? I have been blessed to be a part of many different teams at Healthfirst within my nine-year journey, which include Provider Services, Operational Audit, Appeals & Grievances Operations and Appeals & Grievance Quality. I would like to see my journey with Healthfirst continue through to retirement within the endless opportunities that the company provides. What is your favorite part about being an A&G Quality Assurance Team Leader? My favorite part of being a A&G QA Team Leader is having the opportunity to lead such an amazing group of people and helping them blossom into the next step of their career journey by acknowledging and nurturing their individual gifts. Rosalynn Carter once said, “A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t want to go, but ought to be.” Who inspires you? While there are numerous people who have inspired me, I’d have to pay homage to the first person to plant the seed of encouragement into my career path here at Healthfirst, the late Mrs. Melody Tyler. Her compassion for her team as a leader coupled with her knowledge of Healthfirst was a recipe for success in the lives of so many.

Healthfirst has again earned a top-tier ranking in overall quality and member satisfaction as measured by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) 2022 Medicaid Quality Incentive Program. Among New York State’s twelve Managed Medicaid plans, Healthfirst is one of only two plans to achieve a top-tier ranking and is the only plan in its service area to do so. Healthfirst also earned the highest score in the 2022 NYSDOH Health and Recovery Plan (HARP) Quality Incentive Program. “These ratings are powerful evidence of our belief that all New Yorkers deserve the highest quality care regardless of income. Our commitment to help our community recertify their Medicaid coverage has also kept more people insured, a threshold requirement to have access to the care they need.” – Pat Wang, President and CEO of Healthfirst.
