To wrap up National Safety Month, we would like to highlight another member of our safety team. Chad Davies, Safety Engineer has been influential to our program with his efforts in recycling. He has sought national recyclers for most construction materials on our job sites. “I have a lifetime in construction. I grew up in Ohio building houses with my father as a young boy and through my teenage years,” said Chad. After college, Chad says that he wore all the different hats in construction - carpet installer, framer, roofer, plumber, electrician, superintendent to owning his own company as a General Contractor for 14 years. “A couple of years ago I had a very bad injury to my shoulder that required surgery on five (5) different areas of my shoulder. I was forced into a lot of down time and decided it was time to get my resume out there. I found this to be a great opportunity to expand my horizons and experience, so I looked into safety.” Chad saw safety as a great way to advance his experience, driving his career forward in the construction industry. This was when he found GCON and knew it was the perfect fit for him.   While Chad enjoys what he does, he says it can have its challenges, “It’s these challenges that make the job interesting. Building the respect of the workers on site is the most rewarding part of the job. There are always going to be workers that are not following protocol, not paying attention, or are just having a bad day. Being able to approach these situations and turn them into a positive is a skill that safety personnel need to have.” The best part of the day for Chad is being able to send his crews home just as they arrived, “Knowing that everyone is going home at the end of the day with no injuries, and no incidents because of the solid safety program and support you are a part of brings great satisfaction.”   Something that Chad learned very early on was that the perception of safety personnel could be seen as ‘Safety Police’, “This presents a big challenge when making sure that the subs and their workers are following the protocol. I was lucky to have been mentored by Martin Lopez, Jim Bracke, Jesses Meneses and Brandon Garcia. Shadowing them in the field showed me their patience and the way they approached a situation and spoke to the workers with respect and decency to correct a situation.”   When asked what GCON does differently in our safety program he said it starts with our leadership, “Martin Lopez (Safety Director) is not only a team leader, but he knows how to build respect and comradery among the safety team, the subs, and their workers in the field.” Chad says that the “family” like workplace at GCON helps the safety team shine, “the GCON safety team builds rapport with the field workers through presence and getting to know the subs on a personal level. It’s this type of character that will build rapport, respect and comradery among everyone on site.” Continued in comments...

AI is a new way to manage safety concerns in construction. One unique tool is AI-powered vision technologies which use facial recognition features to monitor indicators of employee fatigue like half-closed eyelids and yawning. Smartwatches can also be used to monitor employees’ vitals. GCON stays current on every possible AI development which has helped us be named as one of the safest construction management companies in the U.S. AI is helping us build smart, fast and safe projects. We embrace these tools to help carry us into a safe and efficient construction future. #oneGCON #NationalSafetyMonth #safety #GCON #safejobsite #phoenixcontractor #teamGCON #constructionsafety #safetymonth

For National Safety Month, GCON would like to highlight one of our Safety Managers, Jesse Meneses, for his hard work and dedication. Jesse has been crucial to the team at GCON, bringing in new technology to make our jobs easier and more efficient. For Jesse, getting into the field of safety was no accident. “Many of my previous jobs prepared me to be in the position I am in today. Often times, I was placed in leadership roles that required me to train new employees and exposed me to direct interactions with low to high level employees and public figures. Not until my time with St. Vincent de Paul did workplace safety really come into the picture.” After his mentor passed away suddenly, Jesse was thrusted into a manager role and was asked by the COO to begin building a safety department while also running another department. Although Jesse knew nothing about OSHA or other safety regulations, he took the role head on. “I quickly became more and more interested in helping employees stay safe and helping the organization reduce injuries and save thousands of dollars that directly went back to helping the community and the organization.” Jesse says that his favorite part of his job is being able to connect with people. “I believe that being a manager is more about managing people and their success rather than managing the job. It’s about helping them make safety an automatic response to their daily duties and raising the standard for the company but also themselves as professionals in the industry.” When asked what one piece of advice he would give to someone wanting to pursue a career like his he said simply, ask questions. “Even the most knowledgeable professionals in the industry are learning new ways to construct bigger, faster, and more sustainable projects. Construction is ever changing and so is safety.”   Jesse says that the biggest difference that GCON has in our safety program is presence. “Presence in the field is insurmountably the most important factor of safety on the jobsite. (GCON) safety knows their names, we share conversations about each other’s families, interest, goals, aspirations, and most importantly we share that we genuinely care about their successes just as much as their failures and will work with them to succeed as professionals and as people.” By doing this, Jesse believes that this helps employees know we believe in them, “and in turn, safety is done by choice instead of being forced.”   Thank you for being a part of #oneGCON Jesse and keep up the great work! 🚧👷🏽♂️🦺 #oneGCON #NationalSafetyMonth #safety #GCON #safejobsite #phoenixcontractor #teamGCON #constructionsafety #safetymonth

“I’m fine.” Avoidance keeps our construction men and women from receiving mental/emotional support. From seeking it out, or even finding out how to start. Avoidance costs us lives, cripples lives, and affects the world touched by our lives. This is a battle GCON has taken on. Our presence is proof. StrongerWork LLC’s purpose with GCON is to expose and overcome the usual mental/emotional health detriments, like avoidance. This helps the GCON team members understand and cope with any difficulties they are experiencing and overcome mental health challenges that run rampant in our society. StongerWork serves our employees by normalizing mental/emotional health in the workplace. This proactively empowers our team members to speak with a friendly, professional, real person in real time to engage with whatever challenges might be going on in their lives. Let’s help to rid ourselves from hurdles like avoidance. We can’t stop the cycles of mental/emotional challenges, but instead, we can heal up, learn, and grow and help our most precious resource – our people – live out better lives at home and at work. #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #oneGCON #phoenixconstruction #communitykindness #mentalhealth #teamGCON #strongerwork #phoenixcontractor #GCON #mentalhealthawareness
