About us
First Place is innovating a holistic approach to supportive housing through sensitive design, mix of uses, an urban location and close attention to replicability. This new nonprofit continues the mission of SARRC, established in 1997 to provide lifetime support for individuals with autism and their families. First Place is developing a mixed-use property and new home option that is supported, community connected and joyfully embraced by the individuals who live there, the people who work there, and family and friends who come and go. The property includes apartments for residents, a residential academy for students and a training institute for professionals and support service providers. First Place is leveraging the benefits of a supportive urban area in Central Phoenix that's been created and facilitated by SARRC. First Place will demonstrate and advance best practices in residential options for adults with autism and related disorders, and inspire public policy changes benefiting adults with autism nationwide and around the world. By developing a new prototype for supportive housing that promotes thoughtful design, community integration and the safety, security and comforts of home, we will enable individuals to live more independently, productively and happily, exceeding their dreams and those of their families.

July is #DisabilityPrideMonth honoring the 1990 signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and celebrating disability as a natural part of human diversity. We asked First Place–Phoenix residents to share their thoughts about this powerful movement, which encourages individuals to embrace their disabilities as integral aspects of their identity and advocates for inclusion, accessibility and equal rights. #ADA #Disability #ActuallyAutistic

Researchers from across the nation recently gathered in Louisville, Kentucky for the annual meeting of the American Association for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD). The First Place Global Leadership Institute’s Maureen Casey, Chief Impact Officer, and Toyosi Adesoye, JD/MPA, Associate Director of Applied Research, presented at the conference. Their focus was data on the housing needs and preferences of adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities—and recommendations to meet those needs. Housing is a key social determinant of health, so it is critical to increase affordable and supportive housing options through data-driven solutions. #HousingDevelopment #SpecialNeeds #DataAnalysis

Chenchen Zhang, The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation public policy fellow for the 2023-24 term at ASU’s Morrison Institute for Public Policy in partnership with the First Place Global Leadership Institute, has completed her white paper. Titled “Exploring the Influence of Zoning Ordinances on the Development of Neuro-Inclusive Communities,” Chenchen dove into the subject with passion and precision. This visionary white paper highlights the role of zoning in the development of more autism-friendly spaces with the goal of changes in public policy for greater inclusivity for all. Kudos, Chenchen, on your hard work—and teamwork—in researching, creating and sharing this timely, relevant topic. https://buff.ly/45J3mxY #NeuroInclusive #Accessibility #DisabilityAdvocate #PhoenixAZ
