Accelerator unveils $4 million "Protofacturing" Program! Rev: Ithaca Startup Works has launched applications for their new Protofacturing Hardware Accelerator! By connecting existing Prototyping and Hardware Accelerators, teams can refine their prototypes and confidently advance to manufacturing. Deanna Kocher, Associate Director of Hardware Programs at Rev, states that the Accelerator seeks "to help entrepreneurs get to a design freeze" so that startups can transition to higher volume production. Physical product startups with proof-of-concept prototypes are encouraged to apply as teams will refine their initial prototypes to create engineering prototypes. Additionally, participants will further develop their customer discovery and secure funding for upfront manufacturing costs. Rev's Hardware Accelerators are administered by Cornell Center for Regional Economic Advancement and support from Cornell Engineering. The program is funded by a $2M "Build to Scale" grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and another $2M local match, including $1M from Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology, and Innovation (NYSTAR) – totaling to $4M. "The prototyping hardware accelerator has equipped me with a customer-centric mindset and enhanced prototyping capabilities," says Hannah James PhD '27, founder of Virtual Fencing. The program curriculum and support will be delivered virtually; participants do not need to be in Ithaca to participate! 🌊Body Tech Revolutionizing Swim Gear🌊 Saira Patel, founder of rsspcts, has always been reluctant to jump into a pool or ocean because of the "pain and suffering that follows". For swimmers with diverse hair types, traditional swim caps may cause tangles, breakage and dryness . According to the CDC, black people drown at a rate 1.4 times the rate of whites. Now, rsspcts is partnering with the Fashion and Body Tech Lab in the College of Human Ecology (CHE) to invent a swim cap with water sealing properties, keeping all hair types completely dry. Patel found the lab through FazeHub, a NY state program that connects entrepreneurs to leaders in manufacturing innovation. Under the leadership of Fatma Baytar, the team seeks to expand access to swimming and water recreation by scanning a 360º view of study participant's heads, hairlines, hair volume, head circumference and more! Baytar states "we're empowering women by helping to design something they will wear and feel comfortable in." The end goal is to promote inclusivity and well-being while helping people of color save on hair routine costs associated with aqua activities. We love to hear updates like this. Hackathon team "Current Care" is continuing to work on their hackathon idea and bring it to market. This incredible team ,that met at health hackathon, is made up of undergrads to Phds, from 3 universities, and a breadth of backgrounds....robotics, CS, ORIE, ECE, Medicine....there solution tackling patient safety was a clear winner. Another origin story in the making. #hackathon #patientcare #patientsafety #healthtech #entrepreneurship
"Create a device to alleviate logistical stressors on caretakers and decrease pressure ulcer incidence/accelerate healing time” 4 months ago, Current Care: a team consisting of me, Andrew Lee, Johnson Liu, Leah Lackey, Brianna Leung, and Justin Liu won the 1st place Grand Prize at Cornell’s Health Hackathon! Pressure ulcers, aka bedsores, affect more than 2.5 million people in the US each year and complicates the care of hospitalized patients which is why throughout the weekend, we set out to bring our mission statement to a reality. We were able to utilize all our different skills and along with the great advice from mentors such as: Karen Santos; Sheila McNally, BSN, RN, CCRN; Michele Fuortes; Carolyn Chu; Elaine Cheng, MD FACS CPE; Hamid Khosrowshahi; Kristie (Resetco) Wells; Matt Jastremski; Michael Wong; and My Linh N. we were able to hone in on an optimal design and even have a working prototype by the end of the weekend! I am incredibly grateful and truly #blessed to be a part of Current Care and for all the excellent mentorship we received! I am also incredibly pleased to give an update that 4 months later Current Care is still working hard on bringing our product from ideation to market! This hackathon would not have been possible without the folks from Entrepreneurship at Cornell and Weill Cornell Medicine and the sponsors such as Johnson & Johnson, dCommunity at Next Jump's NYC Venue. 🎿Dylan Seale ’25, is an avid freestyle skier, the kind of slopestyle Olympic event that enraptures audiences with its gravity-defying aerial flips, jumps and sliding down rails. ❄As with many sporting subspecialties, it has its own equipment, athletic gear and other swag. Seale sought out small independent brands like Arsenic Anywhere, labels that were almost entirely absent in the big sporting goods chains. He reached out to industry experts and discovered that the process of getting products into retail shops is both costly and labor-intensive. 🏂 What if, he thought, he could help these small ski, snowboard and outdoor brands find retailers that would stock them, a matchmaking process that in turn would help snow sports enthusiasts find their dream apparel and equipment? Recently launched The Outdoor Wholesaler provides just that. Seale describes his business as a 24-hour online tradeshow where retailers will discover fresh outdoor brands. And for brands, it’s nonstop and low-effort exposure to brick-and-mortar and even virtual store buyers. ⛰ “There are so many indie brands like us – if [buyers] could have just one website where they could see everything, that would be great, it would help everyone,” said Ethan Shaheen of Paradise Skis Inc. -an early brand partner with The Outdoor Wholesaler. Zachary Marshall ’25, a chemical engineering major and president of the Cornell Ski and Board Club, is working with Seale after meeting him on the chairlift at Greek Peak. Seale received the Human Spirit Entrepreneurship Fellow award for Summer 2024, and is a member of Epsilon Nu Tau Cornell, an entrepreneurship fraternity, and receives mentorship from Blackstone LaunchPad at Cornell https://lnkd.in/gmWRYVix https://lnkd.in/e8F7W6av #studentstartup #entrepreneurship #skiapparel #freestyleski #snowboard #ski #wintergear #sportinggoods
