Back in 2013, I took $300 and bought 3 shares of Tesla. I was scared out my mind, but I did it anyway. I was working on Wall Street watching the 1% pay mutual fund fees that equaled my annual salary 🤨 Do you think being around a bunch of people who didn’t look like me while also having way more money than me…made me uncomfortable? Well it did. The only Black girl as a first year analyst on Wall Street…who knew nothing about investing (even with a degree in finance). My employee performance reviews told it all 🤦🏾♀️ I felt small, but I saw what was possible, and that kept me going. Now, I’ve never been afraid to start, so I took my $300 and went to work! Years later, people are surprised I know what I know, and everyday I get stronger. Why do billionaires have to have all the fun?? This Howard girl from Philly can play the game too!! I'm happy to share the first of hopefully many outputs from our FY23 Capital Markets I&D Democratization of Wealth Thought Leadership focusing on Black Wealth. In addition to individual interviews, we established a corporate outreach partnership with Empify, where we conducted focus groups to gain further insights and solutions for the underrepresented Black investor. Imagine investing in a REIT like Simon Property (SPG), doubling your money, and getting double of what your savings account pays you in passive income. Imagine investing in a stock like Apple, and being up over 200% These are two investments my 6 year old niece has. These are returns my niece has made…how? Because I wasn’t afraid to start small and build over time! Can you imagine what she can have by the time she’s 18. Parents start buying dividend stocks, growth stocks and REITs for your children. Aunties, uncles, grandparents etc. Here’s are 3 reasons why: 1. You can open a fidelity account and buy fractional shares. This means there’s no minimum to buy, but you can still invest in what you want. So, if you only have a little start with, start. Build over time. 2. You can be in charge of the account while they are a minor. Use their birthday money, gift money, allowance, etc and start setting money aside. You can decide what to invest in. Just let it grow and collect income as the child grows. 3. You can easily start helping them bring in $50/month. That’s more than what many of us had growing up. Next thing you know, it’s $100, $250, etc. The more shares of a company you buy, the more passive income they’ll have! Building a passive income portfolio takes time, but it’s income you can have generation after generation. Pensions are fading away, but dividend stocks aren’t. REITs aren’t. Every year the goal of a dividend-paying company is to INCREASE your passive income, so find the REITs and stocks who make it their business to pay you AND your children more cash every year!
