As our summer interns prepare for the upcoming fall semester or their next career opportunities, a few of our senior leaders shared words of wisdom on adversity, triumphs and the importance of embracing the dynamic and fluid nature of the professional journey: 💡 Kodwo Ghartey-Tagoe, executive vice president, chief legal officer and corporate secretary, shared that road bumps are inevitable. In fact, Ghartey-Tagoe joked that he’d earned a PhD in “pretty hard days.” That’s when maintaining the right outlook mattered most. “Your attitude can determine your altitude,” Ghartey-Tagoe said. “We all face adversity, but it’s how you deal with it that determines whether you lay flat on your back or rise to new levels.” 💡 Bonnie Titone, senior vice president and chief administrative officer, recalled a time early in her career when she declined a new leadership opportunity, believing she didn’t have the right skillset to take it on. “After I declined, [my boss] called me and said, ‘I really think this is something you should entertain,’” Titone said. “He thought I had all the attributes needed to be a successful leader, and he would be there to support me. Those words changed everything for me. Just knowing someone would have my back and be supportive really changed the track of my career.” 💡 Sharene Pierce, vice president, talent acquisition and chief diversity and inclusion officer, shared her belief that to reach your full potential, you must embrace the challenge of navigating the unknown. “When you’re stretched or learning something new or receiving difficult feedback, those are uncomfortable situations,” Pierce said. “But growth is not always easy. For 50 years, Lake Jocassee has served as a clean energy source for Duke Energy customers in the Carolinas. The lake has also become a boon for public recreation, which, in 2023, welcomed more than 300,000 visitors. The City of St. Petersburg recently declared July 18 'Duke Energy Day' in recognition of 125 years of utility service in Florida. Headquartered in the heart of historic downtown, Duke Energy Florida and its legacy companies are nearly as old as the city of St. Petersburg, which had about 300 residents when Frank Allston Davis introduced wood-powered electricity. Today, we supply power to 2 million customers in 35 counties across the state. Today, we welcomed nearly 50 Johnson C. Smith University - JCSU students to our Charlotte, N.C., headquarters to learn about the company and the numerous career opportunities that Duke Energy offers. Employees from finance, marketing and information technology shared stories with the students about their professional journeys that led them to Duke Energy, and experiences working in the utility industry. Students went on to ask about work-life balance, the state of renewable energy and how best to prepare themselves as they enter the workforce. When asked about the most rewarding part of his job, Duke Energy intern Kwesi Kyei-Fordjour (pictured, red shirt), spoke to being valued by his team as a contributor to our mission. “It’s rewarding to know that, as an intern, I’m not just doing busy work,” said Kyei-Fordjour. “This is my second rotation [as a Duke Energy intern]. I’ve earned my trust with the team, and they’re assigning me to things that are truly important to the company.” We at Duke Energy are honored to host such a great group of inquisitive students and can’t wait to see the contributions they’ll bring to our communities as the next generation of young professionals.

Happy 40th Birthday to the Duke Energy Foundation! We celebrated with an employee volunteer activity benefiting Oak City Cares and surprised four of our nonprofit partners with $10,000 grants. Partners included the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits, United Way of North Carolina, North Carolina’s Community Colleges Foundation and the North Carolina Chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy. Thanks to our partners and team for making today one to remember!

The newly-minted Woodfin Solar Facility delivers on our commitment to deploy 15 megawatts (MW) of solar and at least 5 MW of battery storage as part of the Western Carolinas Modernization Plan. Energy is fed to the grid to benefit customers in North Carolina and South Carolina, while its geographic location (and unique lease agreement) furthers the community’s renewable energy goals. With help from Duke Energy volunteers and a microgrant from the Duke Energy Foundation, the Area Agency On Aging Of Pasco-Pinellas, Inc. is distributing hurricane kits to hundreds of older adults in Florida.
