We wish we could sign up for this summer camp! Nearly 100 students in 7th to 9th grade will create science experiments with the same high-tech equipment that Eckerd College students and faculty use in its $25 million, state-of-the-art James Center for Molecular and Life Sciences. 🔬 The camp increases interest in STEM careers at a critical stage in students’ academic journeys, and fosters interest and enthusiasm in science through hands-on activities. It was a perfect match for a grant from the estate of Harold Corrigan who cared deeply about helping young people advance and grow and created a legacy gift through the Community Foundation Tampa Bay. As an added bonus: the grant made it possible for 8 scholarships to Shirley Proctor Puller Foundation’s MASTR (math-art-science-technology-reading) Kids Program participants. Through a generous award from RWJF, we’re providing assistance to nonprofits with long-term recovery needs from Hurricane Idalia, which hit last August. Pasco Kids First is one of 4 nonprofits that received funds to restore operations after Hurricane Idalia and to increase community resilience as the 2024 storm season begins. During Hurricane Idalia, one of Pasco Kids First’s building was flooded with a foot of water. Its services for expecting families and parents with young children were halted and relocated to a different building until repairs could be made. This unexpected damage and un-budgeted expense deeply impacted the organizations operational budget. The grant ensured that families could continue receiving services. A thriving Tampa Bay includes all of us. If you've visited Coffee Uniting People - or CUP - in Tampa, you've seen the power that inclusion and economic mobility holds. CUP is on a mission to change the staggering statistic of 4 out of 5 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are unemployed. CUP employs people of all abilities at its shops in the Embarc Collective and South Tampa. Its nearly 40 employees overcome obstacles from intellectual and developmental conditions like autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and traumatic brain injury. Leveraging the power of the nonprofit community, CUP partnered with MacDonald Training Center, Inc. to use their expertise delivering customized workforce training for individuals with disabilities. We support these types of effective nonprofit partnerships that create a more inclusive community and increase employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. With RWJF's support, we’re tackling long-term issues from Hurricane Idalia, which hit last August. Community Food Bank of Citrus County is one of four nonprofits that received funds to recover after Hurricane Idalia and to prepare for this storm season. After Hurricane Idalia, the Community Food Bank fully stocked more than sixty food pantries, ministries, shelters, and soup kitchens across the Nature Coast’s Hernando, Sumter, and Citrus counties. The grant replenished the food bank’s supplies, so it can continue to feed over 70,000 people each month. Did you know that it often takes 14 months – and up to several years – to recover after a major hurricane? That’s the case for several nonprofits in Tampa Bay, and RWJF has provided a generous $300K grant to the Community Foundation Tampa Bay to help Nature Coast nonprofits recover from Hurricane Idalia, and Tampa Bay nonprofits to prepare for the upcoming storm season. With forecasters predicting a record year for hurricanes, it's crucial to prepare our community. We’re equipping Tampa Bay nonprofits with the resources they need to rebuild and replenish while creating resilient organizations and educating residents on hurricane preparedness.
