Sinjar, a region in #Iraq that has faced decades of violence and the devastating impacts of ISIS occupation, is on a path to recovery. The USAID Iraq Community Resilience Initiative (ICRI-Ta'afi) program, funded by the USAID - Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) and implemented by Chemonics, has been instrumental in this journey, supporting over 125 initiatives with local partners since 2018. As we mark the tenth anniversary of the Yezidi genocide in August, it's crucial to reflect on the progress made and the challenges that remain. From rebuilding essential #infrastructure to fostering social reconciliation, Ta'afi's work highlights the importance of community partnerships and #LocallyLed solutions. Yet, Sinjar continues to face significant hurdles, including political disputes and the return of internally displaced persons. In our latest blog, experts from the Ta'afi team, including Chief of Party Joshua Owens, explore the complexities of Sinjar's recovery and outline the critical need for sustained international support. 🌎🤝 Discover "The Case for Continued Support to Sinjar: Ta’afi Lessons Learned and Strategic Opportunities": https://ow.ly/VVop50SKqqV

We had a great time last night at the 2024 Africa Supply Chain Excellence Awards (ASCEA) in Johannesburg! We are honored to have been recognized as finalists for the achievements of the USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project in #Kenya and #Zambia. Since 2021, GHSC-PSM has been working with the Zambia Ministry of Health to design and use their #innovative tool to track anomalies that threaten the effectiveness of the #health supply chain. This tool decreases the risk of false or subquality drugs reaching the market, and ensures medicines get to the right person, at the right place, at the right time! In Kenya, the Afya Ugavi team has worked alongside the national and county governments since 2019 to establish Health Product and Technology Units (HPTUs) to ensure strong coordination and governance of #SupplyChain activities that are #LocallyLed and #sustainable. Chief of Party John Kamau Ngamau said, “HPTUs at the county level have brought a whole new discussion on management of health commodities, which was previously left to pharmacists. It is incredible how their entry has led to a big difference on supply chain outcomes." Investing in routine #immunizations for people of all ages who need them are an important pillar of #GlobalHealthSecurity. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) shares this perspective on why vaccines are critical to advancing #GlobalHealth. Preventing disease outbreaks and preparing for and responding to pandemics means ensuring that vaccines reach everyone. Some highlights from this publication include: 📢Preventing Outbreaks: Routine immunizations not only save lives but also halt disease outbreaks by building robust infrastructure for vaccine distribution. 📢Pandemic Preparedness: The #COVID19 pandemic underscored the need to vaccinate people of all ages swiftly. We need inclusive immunization strategies to respond effectively to future health crises. 📢Funding for Impact: Gavi, in partnership with the Government of France and the African Union , seeks $9 billion to enhance vaccine access in low-income countries, crucial for closing global immunization gaps. 📢US Commitment: The US pledged $1.58 billion over the next five years to Gavi, signaling its commitment to global health security through comprehensive vaccine coverage across all age groups. 📢Moving Forward: Strengthening vaccine delivery beyond childhood is key. By supporting local vaccine production and advocating for universal immunization, we protect communities and promote economic stability. We should seize this moment to build resilient #HealthSystems that protect everyone, from children to the elderly, against preventable diseases. Together, we can ensure that immunization serves as a lifelong safeguard for health and prosperity: https://ow.ly/ZHcf50SJw6G

In the latest edition of our #DevelopmentMatters thought leadership series, Chemonics’ senior advisor for energy and climate, Edward Hoyt, takes a deep dive into how the makeup of South Africa’s new Government of National Unity may strengthen existing efforts to improve #electricity supply and expand investment in transmission that will support accelerated uptake of #RenewableEnergy, while also weakening the influence of pro-fossil sympathizers. He also delves into the challenge of addressing #ClimateChange amid skepticism regarding the #JustEnergyTransition, and how the new government may be poised to address these challenges, as well as the role the #PrivateSector and international donors can play in supporting meaningful progress in the #energy sector.
