Residents from Percy Abram Jr Senior Apartments attended as delegates of the 33rd Annual Convention of the United Seniors of Oakland and Alameda County (USOAC) held at St. Columba’s Church in Oakland a few weeks ago. Residents learned about resources, got to meet their elected officials, and connect with community members. Thank you, USOAC and President Nathan Miley for hosting this event.

CCH is excited to announce that our affordable housing development in Memphis, Covenant Gardens Senior Apartments, was awarded a congressional appropriation for the Community Project Funding Fiscal Year 2025 in the amount of $1,250,000. The City of Memphis Division of Housing and Community Development is moving forward with the grant acceptance process. We are deeply grateful for this investment from Representative Steve Cohen. In partnership with @Pastor Causey at @New Covenant in Christ and the City of Memphis, this development will bring much-needed affordable housing to low-income Seniors in the community.

Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that cities may arrest and fine people for resting outside, when most of the time, they have nowhere else to go. CCH is dissapointed with this decision, which goes against the data on how best to end homelessness. Housing solves homelessness – fines and jails do not. These punitive measures can harm people and make it even more difficult for them to access housing in the future. CCH will continue to invest in and advocate for affordable housing, including the $20 billion affordable housing bond measure for Bay Area counties. We know that affordable housing the best long-term solution to ending homelessness.

This week, the MTC passed the $20 billion regional affordable housing bond, which will now be on the November 2024 ballot. This bond, if passed, will bring in 90,000 new units of affordable housing. CCH's Avni Desai spoke at the hearing in strong support of the bond to support affordable housing production and preservation for those most in need, especially lower-income seniors.
BIG NEWS: Yesterday, the Bay Area Housing Finance Authority (BAHFA) unanimously voted to approve sending a $20B affordable housing bond to the voters on the November 2024 ballot! If passed, the measure will support the development and preservation of approximately 90,000 affordable homes throughout the Bay Area. A message from the Board: For just over a year, Gail Gilman dedicated her time to proudly serving as Christian Church Homes’ President and Chief Executive Officer because she believes in CCH’s mission and our commitment to develop and manage quality affordable housing in caring communities. We appreciate her service and dedication to CCH. While Gail has tremendous gifts, CCH now needs a leader with a different set of gifts and skills. We are thrilled to announce that CCH’s former Chief Operating Officer, Cynthia Alvarez, will be serving as Interim President and Chief Executive Officer. We are confident that Cynthia will excel in this role given her extensive professional background and demonstrated skillset as well as her deep familiarity with CCH and its stakeholders. We both thank Gail for her service and welcome Cynthia to her interim role as President and Chief Executive Officer. Cynthia's appointment brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective, which we believe will be instrumental in guiding us through this transition period. In community, Leslie Taylor Board President

CCH appreciates the work Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies in continuing to bring attention to the ever-growing number of rent-burdened households and the need for more affordable housing. The need continues to grow and we, as a society, can do better. #AffordableHousing #HousingCrisis
Yesterday, Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies released The State of the Nation’s Housing 2024. The report’s findings are stark, but unsurprising, as millions of Americans struggle to make rent, pursue homeownership, or protect their homes from climate disasters. • Since 2020, rents increased by 26%, and home prices surged by 47%. • Half the nation’s renters are cost-burdened, a record 22.4 million households. We need affordable housing production, federal rental assistance, and investments in climate resilience to keep up. Research Analyst Rebekah Fehintola Abioye shares more key findings on our blog: https://lnkd.in/get9Ynv5 #AffordableHousing #RentIncrease #ClimateResilience

Recent polling on the Bay Area-wide affordable housing bond shows that with a strong campaign, we can win $20 billion in new funding, and that Bay Area residents are ready for transformational change. When done right, the regional bond can accomplish building and protecting tens of thousands of affordable homes for Bay Area residents who need help staying in their communities they love. Love this graphic showcasing the significant impact of the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) program! With 17,878 new affordable homes built and 5.2 million fewer metric tons of GHG emissions, the program has been a game-changer. Since 2015, $3.2 billion has been invested in 185 catalytic affordable housing developments. These projects not only provide homes but also integrate housing and transportation with greenhouse gas-reducing infrastructure and amenities, fostering sustainable, connected, and vibrant neighborhoods. Thanks Enterprise Community Partners and California Housing Partnership for demonstrating how WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS! Many seniors and people with disabilities rely on SSI (supplemental security income) to pay for household costs, including rent and food. The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently finalized new rules that will reduce barriers and expand access to SSI. These changes will help older adults and individuals with disabilities who live in low-income households to qualify for SSI and receive the full SSI benefit, reduce reporting burdens, and ensure that food received from friends and family is not counted as income that reduces an individual’s SSI benefit. To learn more about the new rules, please visit: #AffordableHousing
