Mt. Etna, Europe's largest and most active volcano, has been exhibiting increased activity over recent weeks. This culminated in an explosive eruption at its summit crater just a few days ago. Through a series of five experimental interferometric SAR acquisitions, collected with a cadence of ~3 days, Capella's satellites captured the event in amazing detail. The animation below showcases the evolution of the interferometric coherence, computed from a reference SAR image dated July 9, and compared across four subsequent images. In regions with sufficient backscattered signal towards the SAR sensor, bright areas indicate minimal change, while dark areas highlight significant changes primarily due to the emplacement of lava flows and ash. The most dramatic change is represented by the image captured on July 18 at 00:28 UTC, just 4.5 hours after the summit eruption which occurred the day before at 19:51 UTC (as reported by Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia - INGV). Capturing evidence of the eruption so soon after the event is a perfect demonstration of the agility of Capella's satellite constellation. The animation demonstrates the value of persistent monitoring using Capella's high-resolution SAR satellites, with their ability to penetrate cloud and ash and reveal the rapid evolution of volcanic activity, where timing and rapid dissemination of data are crucial. #SAR imagery analysis is far from straightforward. Often, it requires an experienced analyst with extensive radar and scientific studies. Manual analysis of #SAR data is extremely time-consuming, not only because of the complex nature of such images but also due to the sheer number of objects, noise, and other factors typically present on SAR scenes. SATIM Inc.’s #OREC #AI, automatically #detects and #classifies airplanes on SAR imagery. On this Capella Space image, OREC AI was able to detect and classify 1,462 aircraft in 60 seconds. We invite you to bring your own imagery and challenge to us, take advantage of our #API and see the results for yourself. Get in touch with us, and let’s make SAR imagery easy to use. #AircraftClassification #OREC #SSIG #SARimagery #AirboneSAR #DefenseInnovation #SyntheticSignatures #Resilient #Adaptable #Precise #AI #ATR
Exploring the Unseen: Subsurface Cavities on Earth and Beyond Cave systems remain one of the last frontiers of exploration on Earth and other planetary bodies. Lava tubes, natural underground tunnels formed by volcanic activity, lie hidden beneath the surface and offer unique scientific insights and potential habitats for future space missions. Leveraging Capella Space very high-resolution X-band SAR open datasets, Leonardo Carrer led the development of a novel methodology to understand the structure of lava tubes on Earth using Capella’s unique multi-pointing capabilities. Building on this work, a global research team including Leonardo Carrer, Riccardo Pozzobon, Francesco Sauro, Davide Castelletti, Gerald Wesley Patterson, and Lorenzo Bruzzone conducted an innovative analysis of cave conduits on the Moon. The results of their research, published in Nature Astronomy under the title " Radar Evidence of an Accessible Cave Conduit below the Mare Tranquillitatis Pit", highlight the exceptional value of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology. We are continually excited to see how experts in the field leverage our open datasets to create novel use cases for SAR and push the boundaries of what’s possible.
