Katie Williamson, Consultant, Denver 🏃♀️ “My first reaction to El Cruce was, ‘I've never run that far. I could never do that.’ But I got excited about meeting new people, seeing a new part of the world, and doing something I wouldn't have dared to do alone. I've always loved running. I ran cross country and track in high school and started half-marathons in college. Moving to Denver was all about exploring the outdoors and being around adventurous people. So, I took the plunge and signed up for El Cruce. ⛰️ I thought training for the New York Marathon would have prepared me, but El Cruce was different. It was trail running, and I wasn't experienced in that. The challenges were unexpected. In the US, races are planned out, and you can step off the course anytime. El Cruce is more mentally and physically demanding. Set in the Patagonia mountains, it is not possible to quit mid-race. I planned to run 10 miles a day but did less due to the steep terrain. It was about pushing through fatigue and uphill climbs. There was no way out – only through. 🥇 One snowy day on the mountain, 40-mile-per-hour winds made it too cold to stop. It was so loud, that talking to others was nearly impossible. I had to be self-driven to keep going. I might have quit if I could, but I dug deep and kept going, telling myself, ‘I'm going to finish.’ Waking up and running every day gave me a huge sense of accomplishment. Crossing the finish line on the last day was incredibly exciting! 🎂 We had a big celebratory dinner to mark the end of the race. Josh Mann organized a cake for my birthday, which was the same day, making me feel doubly celebrated. It was a special way to spend my birthday. El Cruce proved to be a great opportunity to meet people from around the world. Bainies form a unique bond from this shared experience that is unlike anything else #atBain.”
